Santa Cruz is a city in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 8,269 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north coast of Santa Cruz Island and is part of Silicon Valley. The city was founded on December 12th 1857 by Dutchman Frederik van der Rohe as a small trading post on the site of present day downtown Santa Cruz. The first permanent European settlers were Spanish Franciscans who arrived in 1797 and named it San José de la Antártida after their patron saint, Santiago de Compostela. In 1821, American sailor John Brougham renamed it Santa Cruz for his shipwrecked vessel near that spot in 1824 while searching for land to use as a basecamp for his new mission colony at Monterey Bay. A subsequent act of Congress changed the name to Santa Cruz because "the people hereabouts are more friendly and civil than those in any other part of California." In 1862, during the Civil War, General George Custer's cavalry unit stopped at anvil rookery off the coast of Santa Cruz before moving inland towards Sacramento. After leaving behind some equipment including cannons and horses, local fishermen discovered what turned out to be an American treasure chest full of gold coins that had been hidden by Native Americans centuries earlier when they roamed this area looking for sea cucumbers (a typeof seafood). When news spread about this find, many people from throughout California came Persons so that they could view and possess these valuable relics from another era.
