The Santa Cruz National Guard was activated on November 5th, 1911. The unit was originally called the Infantry Battalion and served in the California state militia during World War I. The battalion became a regiment on December 16th, 1916 and was re-designated as the Santa Cruz County Militia on February 9th, 1921. The regiment served in World War II and since then has been an all volunteer force. On September 15th, 1951 the National Guard Regiment was redesignated as the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department National Guard Unit and continues to serve today.

Santa Cruz, California is a city located on the central coast of California. The population was 25,883 at the 2000 census and 37,554 at the 2010 census. The city is included in the San Francisco metropolitan area. The history of Santa Cruz goes back to 1795 when Spanish missionaries founded Mission Santa Cruz de la VeraCruz. The town started as a small settlement called Pueblo Viejo and grew rapidly due to its location on the Pacific Coast and its link with Spain. In 1846, Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés granted land to John Cranch in exchange for his helping to found Rancho Rinconada. This ranch was used by Mexican ranchers as well as American settlers during the period of United States-Mexico relations known as "the Gold Rush." In 1868, two years after General Rafael Velez y Castro defeated Mexico at Palo Alto and took control of California, he decided that San Francisco should be his capital City proper. He named it La Capital del Pacífico (The Capital of the Pacific Ocean). After years of debate over which city should be selected as La Capital del Pacífico, Santa Cruz won out and became San Francisco's first official city on July 6th, 1872. As part of Urban Renewal programs initiated by Mayor George Moscone in 1965-1968,Santa Cruz began an aggressive program designed to make downtown more attractive to businesses and residents alike through renovation projects such as new sidewalks, landscaping changes (including installation of palm trees), lighting upgrades and more efficient use of building resources. These programs have resulted in increased business activity throughout downtown Santa Cruz since they were implemented; now one can find many restaurants and commercial buildings dating back centuries within walking distance from each other! Today some 30% or more of all jobs in Downtown Santa Cruz are related directly or indirectly to technology - including startups/tech companies clustered around One Market Street near Googleplex Stadium - underscoring just how important digital innovation continues to be for this lively community! Additionally there are several hotels located nearby – most notably Regency Ballroom Hotel - making it easy for tourists or locals who need lodging while visiting Downtown Santa Cruz not only while exploring but also if they want something close by when looking for activities or services...or simply want some peace & quiet!
The National Guard has a long history of providing Gifts and Memorial Service to our Country. In 1916, the National Guard was activated as an army reserve unit in order to provide support for World War I efforts. The first gift that the National Guard received was a rifle and ammunition. The Second World War saw the activation of theNational Guard as part of the military reservation system once again. This time, it was for purposes of providing assistance during The war effort. From 1941-1945, gifts were given more frequently in order to celebrate Veterans Day and other special occasions within the National Guard community. During this time period, donations also began being made towards scholarships for members of the National Guard who desired to pursue higher education after completing their service with the Army or Marine Corps. Since then, gifts have become more sporadic but always respectful and positive in nature. Throughout all these years, we've seen individuals from across our Nation come together to give back something very special- whether it's a new rifle or just a kind word- and we THANK THEM FOR THEIR SUPPORT!
The National Guard has been a part of the United States for over 150 years. The first units were organized in 1892. After World War I, the National Guard was not called to active duty again until 1933 when it was reactivated for the Second World War. During both world wars, there were large numbers of soldiers and sailors in the National Guard. In 1961, the National Guard began providing emergency services through state agencies such as fire departments and police forces. In 1973, President Richard Nixon created an Independent Army Reserve Corps within the National Guard to provide reinforcements during riots or other emergencies. The Independent Army Reserve Corps dissolved in 1996 but its programs and resources continue today as a part of the US Army Reserve Command’s Civil Support Unit (CSU). Today, there are over 350 million people who are members of either national guard units or reserve components thereof; this number is projected to grow by 10% each year through 2020.

After World War II Santa Cruz experienced rapid growth as a result of its position as an seaport and industrial center for technology products such as nylon fishing nets and synthetic rubber tires before becoming known for its wine industry in the late 19th century until Prohibition ended it in 1933. During post–World War II boom years (1947 to 1965) most jobs were created through new production plants built or leased by Southern Pacific Railway Company (SPR), Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Corp., Raytheon Co., McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation (MDAC), Intel Corporation (INTC), Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). However much white-collar work also shifted from cities to inland towns because goods moving through coastal ports were often slowed down by fog or other obstacles en route to inland prices paid here over those prevailing near coastlines where goods could be shipped immediately without waiting for cleared channels or Foggy Bottom Naval Station Washington D." Santa Cruz was first settled by the Ohlone people in the early 19th century. The area that is now Santa Cruz was part of Mission San Francisco de Asís, which was built in 1776 by the Franciscans. In 1821, California became a Mexican territory and Santa Cruz became part of the newly formed Province of Monterey. In 1849, Santa Cruz became a separate county within Monterey County. On July 15, 1860, Santa Cruz County was combined with Marin County to form United States County.
