The Santa Cruz Naval Shipyard has been manufacturing warships since 1885. The first ship they built was the USS Constitution, which was launched on December 12th, 1885. The USS Constitution served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and is considered to be one of the most successful warships of that conflict. In 1967, they began building the nuclear-powered USS Enterprise. The Enterprise served as a flagship for US Naval forces in Central America and was destroyed by an explosion off Nicaraguan coast in 1986. This vessel will serve as a memorial to assassinated president John F Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.
