Santa Cruz, California is located on the southern coast of California, just north of San Francisco. The city was founded in 1849 by Captain John C. Fremont and his lieutenant-governor, George Brown. Its name comes from Spanish Santa Cruz de la Cala, meaning "Santa Cruz Bay" because of its proximity to that body of water. The site for what would become Santa Cruz was first used as an Indian trading post by the Ohlone people in the late eighteenth century. In 1821, Rancho Nueva Vaca was acquired by Pedro Fonseca and sold to Alvarado Haymitch for $8,000. The area around present-day Santa Cruz became part of Mexico after it ceded California to Spain in 1846 following the Mexican-American War. Despite this history, Santa Cruz began developing as a seaport during the 1850s with the arrival of whaling vessels and shipbuilding operations. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses operating in town. One notable development during this time was The Mayflower Wharf Company's construction of a wharf on Pigeon Point that remain today one of downtown's most recognizable features. In 1876, local residents decided to rename their town after Mount Graham – one of Californias most famous mountains – in memory of their former governor and namesake who had died two years earlier while engaged in a wagon ride across the state line into Oregon. At that time Los Angeles County still existed as part of Mexico and no county government could exist within it without its approval from Congress; so much for reform! In 1886–87 voters placed a proposition on ballots seeking ratification of an act establishing county government within Los Angeles County pursuant to which all unincorporated areas eastwardly extending five miles (8 km) from any street or public square were annexed into Los Angeles County … This move followed annexation by Pasadena (then known as Woodland Heights) and other nearby communities along El Monte Boulevard southward towards Carson City … After much wrangling between Pasadena Mayor Waddell Littlefield and then-County Attorney James Murchison about whether such annexations were constitutional due process issues arose we finally came up with an ordinance providing for said annexation which went into effect on November 1st 1888″ (Los Angeles Times 1910). A new courthouse was built at Third Street and Main Avenue between 1889–1890 following designs provided by noted architect Lorenzo Dowling Jr.. The structure served as both court house and jail until 1911 when it burned down along with much else associated with downtownSantaCruz during a severe earthquake measuring 6.0 magnitude on January 26th 1906 (Lopez 1912). A replica courthouse currently stands at Fourth Street near Cunningham Park while another replica is under construction adjacent to Interstate 5 in Monterey Park northeast Of Downtown Los Angeles In 1915 local officials designated Seal Beach Harbor as a Marine National Monument effective July 1st preceding that date . Three years later USS Constitution Museum opened at Seal Beach Naval Air Station’s visitor center which remains open today despite many alterations including moving several times since its opening due to weather changes . In 1930 UNESCO added SantaCruz Island — now known informally as Isla de las Mujeres —to its World Heritage List citing its significant architecture including Missionesque Revival style buildings dating back more than 200 years . Today Isla de las Mujeres is home to several small businesses/villagesand numerous marine species including gray seals
