Santa Cruz, California is a city located in Monterey County, California on the central coast of the United States. Situated on Santa Cruz Island, it was founded by Spanish traders in 1795 and became a U.S. territory in 1821. The city's history spans over two centuries and includes various cultures, including the Ohlone people who inhabited the area for many years before being displaced by European settlers. The current population of Santa Cruz is about 508,000 people with a total land area of just over 12 square miles (30 km2). The original site of Santa Cruz was an anchorage off the southern coast of Monterey Peninsula where Spanish traders landed in 1795 to trade with Native Americans and conduct exploration into what would become California. What would become Santa Cruz was part of Rancho de las Pulgas which was granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado by Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena on July 30, 1821 as part of Mexico's cession to America following its independence from Spain. At first San Francisco Bay filled with shoals that interfered with shipping, Alvarado decided to establish a permanent settlement on an island called Rinconada which he named after his father-in-law Don José Antonio Rincón de la Vega y Bejarano who had helped him purchase Rancho de las Pulgas from Rincón de la Vega y Linares for $1 million dollars in 1819. On December 9th, 1827 Father Junípero Serra arrived at Rinconada from Mission San Francisco and began construction on what would eventually be known as Serra Chapel which still stands today across from City Hall on State Street inside the University Park district. On January 24th, 1830 Don José Mariano Vallejo established Presidio del Monte at Point Reyes National Seashore where he built Fort Carmel for military purposes and also erected several other buildings including Mission San Rafael Arcángel which served as both a church and school until 1862 when it was replaced by the present day Cathedral Basilica di Santa Croce (see photo below). In 1840ito Moreno set up his adobe ranch adjacent to Rinconada beach near present day downtownSantaCruz and continued operations until his death in 1865 In 1850 Candace Hill married Joshua Snelling and moved inland from their farmstead near Folsom Lake into town where they soon ran into difficulty because there were no stores or transportation available so they started selling goods door-to-door In 1851 they opened up their own store next door to Mrs Snelling’s storefront When Mrs Snelling closed her store down around 1860 Candace Hill reopened her store under new ownership but this time selling everything online It wasn’t until 1865 when Candace Hill's daughter Maria sold her business back to Candace Hill herself In 1903 William Durant bought outCandace Hill's share in the business After William Durant died in 1907 his widow Jeannette took over management duties while she lived at home She continued managing things until her death in 1941 after whichatherine Busch took over complete management . From then until 1971 it remained under Jeannette Busch's direct control . lady diane opened her first restaurant here about 1970 catering specifically to gays . during that time there were only 3 restaurants open so all food came fresh ..... later dianes son david took over operations ...... during that time david changed some things like adding more chairs .... more recently diane has introduced air conditioning ............ Lady Diane continues operating today albeit running somewhat differently ...... now all food comes frozen

On December 6, 1847, California became a U.S. territory following the Mexican-American War. On January 3, 1850, Mexico ceded California to the United States in a Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The area now known as Santa Cruz County was organized on February 14 of that year. The first post office in Santa Cruz was established on February 14th with Leland Stanford as its first clerk. In 1861, the local school district was created and named after Mrs. Maria Bautista Dedham (1819-1886), who donated land for a school in what is now downtown Santa Cruz. The first building on State Street was erected in 1865 (pictured). In 1868, the railroad arrived and began serving Santa Cruz with trains from San Francisco via Merced and Paso Robles stations; this allowed for a significant increase of population and development around town center which continued until about 1920 when automobiles became more prevalent
