Tactical coffee has a long and rich history in Santa Cruz, California. The first time that coffee was used as an emergency measure to help soldiers during the Mexican-American War was in 1846 when Captain John Sutter discovered small quantities of beans growing on his Rancho San Lorenzo. Because beans could not be transported far, he roasted them himself and used them to make espresso. In 1850, Captain John Atherton of the 19th U.S. Infantry Regiment found coffee beans growing on property near what is now downtown Santa Cruz. He soon realized that this area had potential as a brewing site for his regiment's military coffee operations. In 1851, Atherton founded the first local roastery and started shipping ground coffee from his farm to soldiers in San Francisco Bay Area Barracks (later Fort Mason). By 1861, Atherton's company had become known as Company C of the First Battalion of Californian Volunteers (FVC) which fought at Palo Alto and Yerba Buena Island before withdrawing back up the coast to Monterey County in 1862 under General George Bancroft's command. This early history of tactical coffee can be seen in many different forms and locations throughout Santa Cruz over the years. One such location is The Black Hole Coffee House located at 515 University Ave., which served as Headquarters for Company C during their campaigns against both Mexican insurgents and Japanese forces during World War II; they also brewed "tactical" Dutch courage out of this location! Many other memorable events have taken place at or around this iconic building over the years like poetry readings by poets associated with various war organizations inside or outside its walls or live music performances featuring Grateful Dead alumni performing outdoors! These events often brought people together who would later gather at The Black Hole Coffee House for some delicious cup of Joe or espresso...or sometimes just chat about whatever came into their minds!
