The business community quickly grew around Cabañas' nightclub, La Isla del Capitan (later renamed Club de las Amarguras), which opened in 1886. By 1910 SantaFe Springs had over 100 businesses with a combined payroll worth $1 million—the largest economy in Alta California at that time. During World War I local industries produced munitions such as ammunition and aircraft parts; during World War II they produced shipbuilding materials including USS Hornet (CV-8) and USS Lexington (CV-19). The name of Santa Fe Springs comes from Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's meeting with Native American chiefs near this location on September 25, 1541. The Spaniards were looking for a spot where they could trade goods with the Indians and find new routes to India. They named this place "Nuevo Granada" (New Granada). In 1819, Isidro Ortiz y Ulloa founded La Paloma Mission here because he wanted to found a Catholic mission between San Diego and Tijuana. In 1892, when Alvarado opened up Kikuang Ranch to ranching operations east of what is now downtown Santa Fe Springs, settlers began moving into the area around present-day Santa Fe Springs. By 1907 there were over 100 homes in the community of Commerce Hill; by 1911 it had grown to 302 residents living on 119 lots within an acre square called la Avenida de las Americas (the avenue of Americas), bounded on one side by Broadway Road and on another by Chavez Ravine Boulevard. On December 12, 1912 Mexico City became an independent country after a civil war that left more than 200 million people unemployed throughout Latin America including much of southern California. On January 3 1920 Mexican President Agustín Pérez authorized Governor Omar Bradley to purchase 1/4 mile (1 km) north of la Avenida de las Americas from José Cámpora for $5 million dollars as part of plans to develop citrus production in Southern California as part of World War I efforts to keep munitions supplies out of German hands

The oilman bought 160 acres of land and built a small community to house his workers. In 1904,Roberts donated 100 acres of land to the city for development into a park.
