However, there is much more to Santa Fe Springs than just its stunning visuals. The city is home to some of the most famous schools in Southern California as well as some of the most popular businesses in Orange County. In addition, Santa Fe Springs has a rich history that can be explored through its museums and parks. Santa Fe Springs was first settled by Spanish settlers in 1795. The city was founded on the ruins of an old mission dating back to 1824. The area that now makes up Santa Fe Springs was originally part of Rancho San Diego. After being sold to Mexican nationals, the rancho was divided between civilian and military owners over time until it finally passed into English hands in 1836. As a result, many aspects of SantaFe Springs' founding story are still debated today. Some historians believe that Father José Huerta may have been behind the idea for a new town in what is now Orange County; however, other sources claim Huerta never had any involvement with developing SantaFe Springs beyond giving input on plans for the town site. Ultimately, what we do know is that within months of achieving possession of Rancho San Diego from Mexico, Anglo Americans began moving into what would become known as “The Heights” neighborhood west of downtown (including present-day Congress Avenue). Spanish missionaries had begun arriving in southern California during James Polk’s presidency in 1846 and built missions at Mission Valley and San Gabriel Mission compounds near Lompoc while also proselytizing among local Indian populations (Gonzalez de la Torre 1850). But despite numerous visits by priests throughout early 19th century land grants hereabouts (euphemistically called “Rancho Las Palmas de las Catas”), no formal establishment or mission occurred until December 1st 1795 when Father Manuel Nieto arrived from Manila with orders from Spain establish religious stations at Onate Creekouiyehwanseehkonchocheontzinohuhquechinohcahuatl second only to Calvary Chapel at Monterey – both lying about twelve miles due eastward on Highway 101 immediately adjacent thereto: see map attached [Nietzsche 1861]. Santa Fe Springs is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 44,754 at the 2010 census. Santa Fe Springs is part of the Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Santa Fe Springs was Manuel Nieto and his wife Yaqui on October 15, 1853. They built a small cabin on the east side of Mount Lemmon just below present-day Interstate 10. Nieto's son José built the first store in Santa Fe Springs on Main Street in 1859. A post office called "Santa Fe" was established in 1865 and remained operational until it closed in 1912. In 1868 Wm J Hite erected a log cabin near present-day intersection of State Route 66 (SR 6) and Mount Lemmon Road (now US 101). Hite also set up a sawmill which became one of the largest businesses within town limits until it closed around 1935. In 1870 Wm Burchfield platted what is now downtown SantaFeSprings with lots for $1 per acre (0·40% of an acre). It was Burchfield who named the town after English general Sir John Moore whose forces were routed by Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during the Mexican War of Independence that began November 25,1821. By 1873 there were six stores and several buildings used as businesses such as law offices, residences for high-ranking government officials or military officers and their families, hotels/motels, grain elevators etc., including two churches: First Presbyterian Church located at Fourth and Congress Streets west of Main Street; later called Cathedral Protestant Episcopal Church operating from 1905 to 1930; then called Christ Redeemer Lutheran Church operated from 1930 to 1945; both buildings are still extant today adjacent to City Hall building on Third Avenue northwest corner between Broadway and Capitol Streets southwest corner between Clinton Boulevard east side).
