Santa Fe Springs is a small city located in Kern County, California. The population was 5,391 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Victorville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Santa Fe Springs was founded on December 25, 1887 by John Pemberton and his wife Anna Maria Pemberton as a post-office named for their daughter Santa Fe. However, large numbers of Mexican immigrants began arriving in Southern California during the late 1960s through early 1970s looking for work opportunities after being released from prison or military service in Mexico City or elsewhere throughout Central America. As these newcomers moved into rural areas near Los Angeles County—particularly those near downtown SantaFe Springs—the old growth residential neighborhoods around Fourth Street became known as "The Ghetto."
