Santa Fe Springs is a city located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 492 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulare metro area. Hollywood Boulevard runs through downtown Santa Fe Springs. The community began as a small, isolated mining town in 1865 near what is now downtown Santa Fe Springs. Mining operations ceased in 1875 and the town slowly grew until it became an incorporated place in 1912 when it annexed neighboring El Cajon and Paradise Valley. Growth continued until World War II when the war led to a decrease in industry and joblessness among miners which caused many families to move out of Santa Fe Springs into their homes around the county seat of Bakersfield. Major development occurred during the post-war years with new housing developments being built on both sides of Center Street between Our Lady of Fatima Avenue and La Jolla Road; these were known as "The Hills". Businesses that had closed down due to Prohibition (1938-1945) reopened but with stricter regulation from local authorities because then there was no legal protection against bootlegging liquor by Mexican American citizens living within American borders without proper documentation. At this time, social clubs were started for friends who wanted to share common interests such as fishing or golfing; these eventually evolved into more formal organizations such as churches and fraternal organizations after prohibition ended. Santa Fe Springs is located in Imperial County, California, about an hour northwest of San Diego. The name "Santa Fe" means "holy mountain." It was first settled by Mission Indians in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Santa Fe Springs began as a small town in the 1850s, but it only reached its peak during the turn of the century. The city's history can be traced back to 1875, when James Wickersham built a small ranch on Rancho Niguel, just south of present-day Santa Fe Springs. The Wickersham family ran the ranch until 1916. In that year, they sold their holdings to A.J. McCloskey and his brother-in-law Hiram Maxim for $1 million dollars ($24 million today). McCloskey renamed the property Rancho Niguel after his Mexican home town of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (now Nuevo Leon), Texas. He also founded McCloskey Bros., one of Southern California's largest publishing houses and one of America's most successful mail order businesses before dying in 1925 at age 80 years old. In 1915, movie star Cecil Bickford purchased parts of Rancho Niguel from McCloskey Bros., creating what would become known as Hollywood's most famous cattle range - now part of Chaparral National Park - with over 2 million acres (8 km²) totality! In 1922 Bickford donated land to build what would become known as Malibu Beach Boulevard; this was followed by other donations throughout the 1920s and 1930s which helped make Santa Fe Springs one of Southern California's wealthiest communities ever! During World War II many soldiers stationed at nearby Tank Corps training fields ate at Donnybrook restaurant on Military Road near present day State Route 66 (then US 101). The restaurant closed down in 1945 due to government regulations against eating food from Nazi Germany or any other Axis powers during wartime times! Today much of Santa Fe Springs' downtown are still original brick buildings dating back to the 1800s including: Main Street Methodist Episcopal Church (1898), Pueblo del Norte Hotel & Saloon (1912), Hacienda de las Flores Adobe & Hospitality House (1915), Donnybrook Restaurant & Bar Ltd.(1945-1950), Joe McCarthy Place(1954-1966) and The Rialto Theater(1967-1975). There are also several large modern buildings such as City Hall () and JPL/Caltech (). Many smaller historic buildings have been replaced with newer structures since then including: Friars Gate Baptist Church (), High School (), Gertrude Chandler Playhouse (& adjacent Wellesley Manor Apartments)), Presbyterian church (), Western Union Telegraph Company Building (), Loyola Marymount University School Of Medicine () and various business addresses like First United Bank (), Old Pacific Telephone Company () etc...
