Santa Fe Springs was founded in 1887 by the City of Santa Fe and the County of San Bernardino. The city grew rapidly due to its location on the foothills of mountains, and by 1912 it had reached a population of over 100,000 people. In 1916, the county donated land east of downtown to create Rancho Bernardo Adobe National Monument. In 1969, local AIDS activist Rick Rubin moved to Santa Fe Springs from Los Angeles after being diagnosed with HIV. Rubin helped start The Gay Men's Health Crisis (TMHC), one of the first organizations focused exclusively on helping people with HIV/AIDS. The first Europeans to enter what is now SantaFe Springs were mounted warriors who named it after Tejas Pueblo on Decatur Creek where they intersected Spanish traders traveling northward from Mexico City under Governor Alvarado de Mendoza In 1887 Manuel Nieto arrived from Chihuahua via Stockton with his family travelling overland along what would later be called Old Mexican Road from Zacatecas up through Sonora into present day Kern County Nieto became interested in exploring this new land he had discovered east of Bakersfield when he saw some beautiful homes built by white men near Union Adobe Creek on what would become known today as Chavez Ravine He contacted local ranchers who allowed him access to their land so he could build his own homestead about three miles northeast of town on what is now Eddy Street southeast of Chavez Ravine On July 16th 1890 Don Diego Chavez Sr., Don Jose Nieto y Cordero purchased 640 acres bounded northerly by Brushy Hill Road on present day East Third Street south of Highway 99W between Old US 101W & I-5W & northward 10 rods along present day Avis Boulevard across Brushy Hill Road from East Third Street prior thereto being surveyed . . .
