The Santa Fe Springs Naval Shipyard has been a naval shipyard for over eighty years, and the Navy has been its main client. The yard has built many warships, including sixteen USS Los Angeles (CV-4) class ships and three nuclear submarines. This paper will look at some of the navy's Deployed Gift History in Santa Fe Springs, California. In 1951, the Santa Fe Springs Naval Shipyard was established to build destroyers for the United States Navy. At that time there were only two types of destroyers – those built by Newport News Shipbuilding and those built by Fletcher Scott & Son. The first destroyer to be built at the Santa Fe Springs Naval Shipyard was DDG-106 named after General John Fetterman who commanded US Marines during World War II. DDG-106 was christened on October 7th, 1951 by Rear Admiral Maurice Ewing Jr., Commander Destroyer Force Pacific Fleet during a ceremony attended by then Secretary of Defense James Forrestal and Rear Admiral David Hodge commanding USN Forces in Japan. DDG-107 followed on December 29th, 1951 with her sister ship USS San Diego (ASR-2). These two ships served as Guardship Ships off Okinawa until their conversion into Destroyers in 1954 when they became operational with Task Group 66.7 which was responsible for patrolling Japanese ports along the Taiwan Strait and other areas near Japan as well as performing searches for enemy submarines or planes operating within Japanese airspace. In 1957, CG 65th Destroyer Squadron was activated at Yokosuka Bay to provide antisubmarine warfare protection for American carriers transit through international waters from Korea to Japan via Osaka Harbor with Operation Harvey being their first mission under this squadron command arrangement; however CG 65th Squadron disbanded following Exercise Tiger I in 1958 due to lack of funding and replacement vessels not being available soon enough after launch which made it difficult to maintain an effective antisubmarine warfare capability around major U S naval bases worldwide……….. On March 15th 1959 USS Tuscaloosa (AGS-5) collided with SS America while underway in international waters off Okinawa causing both ships to capsize resulting in injuries to over 1,500 people onboard both vessels including 497 sailors aboard Tuscaloosa which led directly to her grounding nine days later on April 3rd 1959 she finally arrived back at port after 526 days spent adrift without supplies or survivors……………. USS Kearsarge (PFH-1), launched on September 25th 1978 is one of only four guided missile frigates ever commissioned into service by the United States Navy She is also one of just a few frigates still afloat that were fueled using oil instead of coal starting out her career she conducted hunter/killer exercises using sonar while deployed off Kuwait before returning home late summer 1990……………USS Mesa Verde (LST 9001), launched on November 12th 1981 conducts Composite Missile Defense Operations working mainly together with USS Ponce (LPD 17) conducting fire control trials against Iraqimissiles prior to deployment…………..USS Enterprise (CVN 64) docked at NAS Oceanside on July 21st 1998 sponsored by California Governor Gray Davis receives Ready Steady Go teams from local high school students who set up shop inside her hangar decking his aircraft carrier Red Flag Day ceremonies are held each year when he arrives SANTA FE SPRINGS - On July 20th 2006 CVN 64 hosted National Blue Angels Demonstration Flight from NAS Point Loma located about 30 miles east of downtown San Francisco

The United States Naval Academy’s Class of 2021 will celebrate their first year of service in the Navy with a variety of military-themed gifts. One such gift is the USS Constitution Museum mug, which is modeled after one provided to President George Washington by Secretary Benjamin Rush during his stay at Annapolis in 1798. The USS Constitution Museum mug was donated by retired Rear Admiral Harry B. Schlosser, Jr., Commander, Destroyer Squadron 5 (DESRON 5), during an event held on October 1st at the Naval History Center in Washington D.C. Another unique gift for members of the Class of 2021 is a personalized Navy plaque honoring them while they are deployed overseas.
