The Santa Fe Springs Naval Shipyard in California is one of the most active decommissioning centers for Navy ships in the Western Hemisphere. The facility has been a major naval shipyard since 1887, when it was founded as the Torrey Pines Naval Shipyard on Torrey Pines Island. In 1971, the shipyards were transferred to the Department of Defense and became part of the Pacific Fleet Headquarters. Now that DTSA has regained responsibility for NASSPR, they are planning to reopen it as an operational naval shipyard effective 2019 with plans to have it up and running by 2021 or 2022-23. According to DTSA officials, this will be a significant change from how things currently stand which is that NASSPR will primarily be used for maintenance purposes only and not operate any warships whatsoever. They also mention that there are several mothballed vessels stored at NASSPR which will need to be disposed before being moved out so that they can become operable again- something which seems very possible given current conditions within DHS’s funding streams..
