Santa Maria, California is a small city in Kern County, California. The population was 10,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salinas–Kern City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town and its ZIP code were founded in 1887 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte as São Miguel de Anchieta. Santa Maria, California is a small town located in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population of Santa Maria was reported as 9,890 as of the 2010 census. The name "Santa Maria" means "Holy Mary." The first European to visit Santa Maria was Captain Juan Bautista de Anza on October 25, 1769. He named the site San Miguel and established an adobe mission there. In 1824, Father Junípero Serra founded Mission Concepción de la Trinidad y Ojo de Dios (Concepción of the Blind and Eye) at present-day downtown SantaMaria. In 1853, gold was discovered in nearby Monterey County and miners from Santa Barbara started arriving in Santa Maria to prospect for gold. By 1861, over 1,000 people lived in the town. On November 16 that year, a detachment of Ulysses S Grant's Ninth Infantry Regiment arrived at what is now downtown SantaMaria with orders to build a fortification against Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The fortifications were never completed because of Confederate defections and Union advances through the region; however they are still visible today along US 101 near where they once stood On January 24, 1870 ASCII (the precursor to Unicode) was created when Commodore John Paulding announced his discovery of Mare Island off Cape Mendocino in celebration of America's centennial birthday Katherine Webb became the first woman to graduate from college in North America when she attended Mount Holyoke College (later Mount Holyoke University) as a student at neighboring South Hadley College on May 15th 1889 becoming one of only two women ever elected members of Phi Beta Kappa fraternity undergraduate students at Pomona College formed their own football team called "Pomona Bulldogs" which played its inaugural game against Occidental College on October 3rd 1895
Santa Maria, California was founded in 1821 by Father Manuel Nieto and Mission San Francisco de Asís. The mission was abandoned in 1836 and the town grew up around it. In 1849, Santa Maria became an incorporated community under the name of Victoria.
