The history of Santa Maria, California is one that can be traced back to the time when it was known as Mission San Antonio de los Pueblos. The mission was founded in 1777 by Father José de la Cruz and Masterbuilder Francisco Palomo. The name “Santa Maria” comes from the Spanish word “santo” meaning holy. In 1821, the Mexican government changed the name of Mexico City to Ciudad del Rio Grande and established a new district called sector X because of its importance in trade with Sonora. This district included what is now SantaMaria and also included parts of present-day Hacienda Heights. In 1848, while still part of Mexico City, Santa Maria became an independent Californian town governed by a board of commissioners appointed by Governor Manuel Noriega. On March 6, 1850, after years of negotiations between Mexican officials and American settlers, the first Anglo settlement in California was made at Point Conception onight (present-day Mission Hills). By this time, most people in SantaMaria were Anglos who had come overland from New England or Southeast Asia. At first there were only a few families living here; but soon enough others arrived to form a small town nucleus that grew rapidly until 1800 when it reached 1,500 people. With its own schoolhouse (1854), jail (1859) and church (1860), Santa Maria quickly began developing into one of northern California’s leading agricultural towns during its early days. During much of the 19th century various attempts were made to annex or purchase sections of what is now southern Los Angeles County; however none succeeded until 1893 when Governor Goodwin Knight finally granted cityhood to SantaMaria despite strong objections from some members of his own administration including Mayor Richard Jaffe who felt that he should have been given honorary city status instead After becoming an incorporated city on December 16, 1903 following passage by both houses of the state legislature entitled “An Act Granting To The Town OfSantaMaria Municipal Corporation Charters And Powers All That Is Necessary And Proper For Its Organization And Function As A Municipal Corporation” many rapid improvements came about including: expansion into residential areas beyond those originally allotted for growth; establishment/establishmentof schools including two high schools as well as several vocational training institutions; creationof parks and gardens; erectionofthe first municipally owned waterworks system in North America providing municipal services via gravity irrigation throughout most OFPZD lands east thereof for more than fifty years subsequent annexation(1927) bringing area within present day East Los Angeles Unified School District

The first Europeans to visit Santa Maria, California were the Spanish in 1821. The town was founded by Mission San Francisco de Asís on May 25, 1777. It was named for the Virgin Mary because of its location at the mouth of Mission Creek. The mission was destroyed by an earthquake in 1853 and rebuilt as a school and parish church. In 1876, the California Central Railway built a line from Stockton to Santa Maria. The track crossed over Mission Creek and the town began to grow rapidly. By 1907, it had a population of 5,000 people. In 1916, the United States Postal Service launched a mail service between Stockton and Santa Maria through nearby Folsom. This allowed for more people to move into SantaMaria and make it their permanent home. Santa Maria experienced its own great growth during World War II when American forces constructed airfields there for Use in war efforts such as Bomber Command RAF (the “Battle of Britain”). When Japan invaded America in 1941, American soldiers responded with Operation Barbarossa which resulted in the destruction of much Japanese infrastructure including transportation systems throughout Japan including Hitachi’s Railroad network that ran between Tokyo and Kobe
The name Santa Maria comes from the mission of San Miguel de Allende, founded in 1769 by missions governor Felipe de Neve. In 1821, the Mexican government ceded Alta California to the United States and renamed it California. TheMission Santa Maria de la Paz was established two miles (3 km) east of present-day downtown Santa Maria on November 24, 1824. The Mission was secularized in 1839 and razed in 1880.
