Santa Maria, California is a small city located in the Central Valley of California. The population was estimated at around 100,000 in 2009. Santa Maria is situated on the banks of the Sacramento River and has a humid subtropical climate with cool winters and hot summers. The history of SantaMaria began with Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico founded in 1821 by Father José Gomez de la Rúa. The mission became active from 1827 to 1853 when it was extended to include land east of the river for missionary settlement. In 1854, the Mexican government designated portions of northern California as part of Alta California under Governor José Joaquin Morral y Sotelo. After Mexican independence was achieved in 1848, American settlers started arriving in what is now SantaMaria to establish ranchos and farms. It wasn’t until 1865 that a post office was established in what is now town square; later that year an engine house (now a museum) was built near what is now Main Street to serve travelers coming through the area on their way to Northern California or points northward. In 1886, during one of several floods caused by heavy rains originating from central Mexico City residents went into panic because they thought their homes were under water; they quickly realized this wasn’t true when they saw alligators swimming among their belongings downstream from Mission San Francisco de Asís (founded 1769). That same year saw the founding of local newspapers; "The Daily Californian" (1886-1990), "The Republican" (1889-1970), "The Sentinel" (1892-1973), "The News Telegram" (1901-1974) followed suit soon after before being replaced by more recent publications over time such as "Santa Maria Times Herald" (1978-present). An amusement park called “Casa Grande” opened in 1880 adjacent to present day Main Street which closed within 5 years due to high costs associated with upkeep plus competition from other parks across town while popular attractions like ice cream cones changed hands multiple times between operators over its years open including becoming ownership change hands four times between 1893-1900 according To Park History Museum records In 1908 An Old Navy Shipyard facility nearby came online supplying electric sparks used for illumination inside Casa Grande until circa 1957 when it too closed down due largelyto lack thereof use following many earthquakes activity had increased along Ivarstrand Rd south side past current day PHS building then beginning again 2006 With approval From City Council Historic Preservation Officer $5 million been allotted for renovation/constructionreplacing old Spark lines lights fencing paths pathways gazebo etc..Programming will begin Fall 2007 completion anticipated early 2008 ..2 new buildings will be erected next door on former spark property .An event center & gift shop have also been planned .A green roof has already been installed . Santa Maria, California is a small town located in the Kern County area of Southern California. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. Santa Maria is one of the oldest towns in Kern County and has been around for over two centuries. The first European to influence the area was Diego de Almagro, who founded Mission San Gabriel on December 21, 1771. In 1821, Mexico won its independence from Spain and established their own government. As part of this new government, Santa Maria became part of Californias Mexican territory. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, American forces invaded Mexicos southern border and captured Santa Maria while it was under Mexican military control. The town then reverted back to Mexican control until November 12th 1850 when it was ceded to United States ownership by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. With its new owners came a new mission called Nuestra Señora de la Merced which served as a parish center for most of ranching activity in the area until after World War II when all religious functions were moved to nearby Bakersfield or Chico also in Kern County. Although some people continued to live in SantaMaria after becoming US citizens through marriage or naturalization ceremonies during this time period various other activities such as farming took place throughout much of what is now Kern County outside of SantaMaria In 1951 local citizens - led by Mayor Donnelan Sells - successfully lobbied Congress to annex parts of Kern County that lay east and south of Interstate 5 into Los Angeles county because they felt that more than enough land had been given up westward since California acquired its statehood including much present daySanta Maria Today much remains apart from downtownSantaMaria with single-family homes being scattered throughout wide areas adjacent to agricultural fields The history and cultureof Saint Marys Parish dates back many years before it even incorporated as an incorporated municipality amendment on February 9th 1912 made sure that all residents within its boundaries (east side only) would be included within both St Michaels Catholic Church & School though there may have initially been just a few families living there . On July 10th 1920 election results showed that 44%of registered voters voted against incorporation but 2/3rds did not turn out due mainly to fear about losing their jobs if their municipal boundaries changed . Within 2 years same numbers voted YES for Amendment #2 giving full voting rights (and taxing powers)to our beloved Parish Council Its charter authorizing formation read: "we DECLARE IT OUR INTENT TO CONDEMN ALL FALSE CLAIMS THAT WE ARE UNBORN AGAIN AS POSSIBLE A RESULT OF THIS AMENDMENT" although we know from prior experience how things can go wrong... ALMOST FROM THE START! After ratification went thru City Marshal Tom Doherty arrested 22 Citizens on false charges claiming they hadn't paid taxes since 1914 INCLUDING 3 Masons! This sets off an uproar among our elderly Residents who had nothing whatsoever do do with this nonsense!!! Of course these arrests created more chaos leading eventually to our current situation where nearly everyone knows everyone else BUT noone bothers TO SHOW UP FOR THEIR CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS anymore...except maybe FOR THE MAYOR AND SOME OF HIS STAFF WHICH SHOULD BE PREPARED TO RESPOND TO ANYTHING THAT GETS OUT THERE
