From the early days of coffee,Santa Maria was a center of roasting and brewing. For over a century, its artisans have overseen the production of one of California's most cherished beverages-coffee. In 1847, Spanish missionaries founded Santa Maria de la Cruz mission in what is now Santa Maria County. They brought with them their new technology for coffee beans and processing-a French press. The Jesuits soon moved into the mission, and within a few years began to roast coffee beans and serve it fresh to their visitors. The first potters were also born in SantaMaria; they created small cups, bowls, mugs, tassles and other small items from clay or wood. As time passed, more and more people turned to hand-roasted coffee as their preferred beverage. By 1900 there were nearly twenty potters operating in SantaMaria alone. Santa Maria, California is a small town located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California.
