The Santa Maria Coast Guard Station was established on October 5, 1892 as a result of the outbreak of the Spanish-American War. The station's first commanding officer was Captain John L. Madden with his crew stationed at Point Isabel. In 1915, Captain James E. McDonnell assumed command and soon after began construction of a lighthouse which was completed in 1916. In 1923, the Coast Guard Station relocated from Point Isabel to its present location on Broadway in Santa Maria. The primary function of the Coast Guard Station has been maritime security and search and rescue operations since it's inception. In addition to providing law enforcement services, the station also provides education to local children about maritime safety and smuggling techniques. During World War II, the Coast Guard Station made important contributions to our country by conducting antisubmarine patrols off Cape Mendocino while also providing medical relief during both campaigns. Since its establishment as a coast guard station, Santa Maria Coast Guard Station has maintained an important role in keeping our community safe by providing support for local law enforcement agencies and responding to emergencies such as fires, hurricanes, earthquakes and landslides; however current operations focus more heavily on patrolling our waters for illegal activity including fishing violations, boat accidents and collisions with vessels offshore

In addition to their duties on the California coast, the Coast Guard also has a presence in Grand Canyon National Park and Sonoma County.
Santa Maria, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 7,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. Santa Maria is located on the San Joaquin River and has a maritime history dating back to 1836 when it became part of the Mexican port of Balboa. In 1860, it was renamed after Saint Martha of Padua because of its proximity to that saint's birthplace in Perugia, Italy. The town first began to be settled by American East Indians in 1846 as part of Rancho de las Pulgas de la Bahía or "Rancho Santa María". The name change came about because both the Bahía and Santa María were Spanish words meaning "holy mountain" and "mountain peak", respectively. In 1850, John Marshall Fremont discovered gold near present-day Santa Maria while exploration for new land along the San Joaquin River. This led to many people moving into what would become Santa Maria from nearby Stockton and Sacramento during this time period; including George Washington Carver who founded Carver University in 1911. In 1870s construction started on what would become known as "The Old Mission" which served as a Catholic church and school until 1924 when it was replaced by the current structure with an identical design - one of only four wooden churches in America still standing operating today (the others being Trinity Episcopal Church in Hartford Connecticut, Methodist Episcopal Church at Elmhurst Queens Village New York City and Congregationalist Church at 175th Street/ Roosevelt Avenue in Brooklyn). The old mission also housed a botanical garden which still exists today adjacent to First Baptist Church on Main Street (now home to Park Place Apartments). In 1908 residents organized themselves into committees formulating plans for incorporation as a village under state law then passed by voters later that year. On July 10th 1909 Village President James Aiken presented petitions for incorporation with 1,521 signatures from citizens living within its boundaries; becoming official annexation occurred on October 16th that same year with all incorporated individuals formally given their municipal rights under Article VIII section 3(b) of the Kern County Charter.. Santa Maria was historically known as "The Vineyard of the East". Agricultural production played a major role in early SantaMaria development. Today, the city's economy relies on tourism and trade with nearby cities such as Fresno and Bakersfield. Some believe that winegrowing may have been a key factor in early Spanish settlement in this area; however, there is no evidence to support this claim. On November 17th of each year (known locally as "Stupid Name Day"), residents of Santa Maria celebrate their community’s history by holding annual events honoring some of its most significant historical figures or individuals. These include street festivals celebrating local favorite foods or drinks (e.g., pumpkin pie), carnival rides (including games like cornhole), traditional dancing and singing contests among friends & family members (i.e., fiestas), poetry readings from local authors (usually during fall/winter months), picnics outdoors on beautiful open space like Park Boulevard or at neighboring creek margins near historic residences like Doña Ana Inn & Spa, etc.—all without any commercials over loudspeakers! A variety of arts and crafts are also popular during Stupid Name Day events - everything from creativejarves to handmade bread!
On December 25, 1847, Santa Maria was founded by Father Francisco Lopez and his wife María de la Candelaria. The town was named in honor of the Virgin Mary. In 1850, the first school opened in Santa Maria. In 1865, the first post office was established in Santa Maria. On October 1, 1888, a fire destroyed most of the downtown business district and left many stores and businesses vacant for several months. The reconstruction project took many months and cost $2 million dollars. The new downtown district reopened on November 3, 1888 with a more modern facade and more public services.
