Despite this history and lack of development however, there are many interesting features and structures remaining in Santa Maria today including: Anchor House - This two-story building is located on Main Street and is dedicated to Captain John FOSTER who built it in 1892 as part of his irrigation farmstead which he named "Foster's Anchor". It has been restored and now serves as a museum open daily from 9am-4pm except Christmas Day when it remains closed until 6pm. The house also has several eerie stories associated with it such as one where an old woman who haunted it would tell visitors she helped build it while alive but then died suddenly just after they arrived home; another story says that during prohibition (1912-1918) bootleggers used Foster's Anchor as their hideout due to its close proximity toulets operated by local officials). The first post office opened in Santa Maria in 1857. The town experienced rapid growth during the 19th century due to its agricultural production and trade abilities. By 1912,Santa Maria had over 10,000 residents and had become an important commercial center for central California. However, during World War ISantaMaria's population decreased as many men enlisted to fight in Europe while their families remained behind to tend to their crops and livestock. After World War I ended, Santa Maria experienced another period of growth which culminated in the late 1920s with the construction of several large factories which transformed its economy into one of prosperity and prominence. The current makeup of Santa Maria is more diverse than at any time since its founding; however, its largest group are Hispanic Americans who make up 50%of its population. Although most people here speak English as their primary language, there are also many Italian speakers present as well as some German speakers and Portuguese speakers. There are also sizable numbers of East Asians and South Asians living hereabouts who have come to work or study in recent decades alongside American-born citizens. Despite these changesover time, much about what makes SantaMaria unique remains unchanged: Its inhabitants continue to cherish their community spirit which has helped keep it thriving despite difficult times; its churches remain keystones of local society; and its annual festival - known scientifically as "Fiesta de la Paz" - remains one of the most popular events on Mainland California's calendar
The first Europeans to explore and map Santa Maria, California were the Spanish in 1769. The mission was founded by Father Junípero Serra and named for Saint Martha of Samosata. The original Mission Santa Maria was destroyed in 1827 by a fire, but rebuilt a few years later. In 1853, the Mission San Francisco de Asís became the first national mission in California. The church was burned down in 1906 during the Alaskan Gold Rush, but was rebuilt again.
