Santa Maria is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 721 at the 2010 census. Santa Maria is located on San Pablo Bay and is part of the San Francisco Peninsula. It annexed parts of Yountville and Sausalito in 1873 and 1886, respectively. The first Europeans to visit what is now SantaMaria were two Spanish missionaries, Father Junípero Serra and Father Fernando Alonso, who arrived on October 26, 1775. In 1846, when the United States acquired California from Mexico under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Santa Maria became part of U.S. territory as part of additions made to the new state by President Polk. The city was named for both Stations of Our Lady (of Snowdonia) at Monterey—one established in 1824 by Bishop José Joaquín de Olvera y Urrutia and another erected in 1827 by Pedro Amador Canales y Valdés as Mission Santa María del Carmelo (later renamed Villa Real). On December 6, 1850 an act recognizing Mexican land grants within California passed Congress; consequently much of what is now north central SantaMaria was owned by Mexico until it was given back to the United States following World War II as part of General Douglas MacArthur's "re-acquisition" program which also included portions of Sonoma County and Marin County. The first post office was established in 1802. In 1825, the city became a Mexican state capital when Mexico gained its independence from Spain. Santa Maria experienced significant growth during the late 19th century as a result of the railroad industry and agricultural production. The population reached more than 100,000 by 1910 but dropped to less than 60,000 by 1920 due to various factors including World War I and Prohibition. However, recent economic development has led to an increase in the population to around 100,000 again.
