There has been coffee production in Santa Maria for more than 125 years. The first documented coffee crop was grown on the site of present-day Santa Maria in 1892. In 1915, a small company, Don Julio's Coffee Company, established a roastery on Mission Street. The company continued to produce coffee until its closure in 1978. The early pioneers of coffee production in Santa Maria were the Spanish Franciscans who arrived in 1769 and began to evangelize the area. The friars also started a convent on Mission Street and an agricultural school on Peralta Avenue which became known as "La Casa de Fuego." In 1892, Father Isidro Gomez organized a group of men from various villages near San Diego to begin producing coffee. This group is considered to be the precursor of today's Santa Maria Coffee Company (SMC). In 1915, Don Julio's Coffee Company became one of the first companies to import Columbian beans from Colombia and began marketing their product under the name "Paso Robles." A few years later, SMC introduced their own roast style - called Rinconero - which set them apart from other local brands at that time. In 1938, SMC established its own processing plant on Igarza Road which continues to serve as their primary source of roasted beans today. Santa Maria, California was founded in 1769 by the Franciscan missionaries. The mission was called San Miguel and it was located on the present day border of Riverside County and Tehama County. In 1821, the mission was abandoned and its land became part of Rancho Santa Margarita. In 1848, Rancho Santa Margarita was amalgamated with other ranches to form Imperial Valley Land Company. On December 12, 1850, Santa Maria City Council voted to change the name of their city from San Miguel to Santa Maria because they believed that this would be more likely to be accepted by residents. The first post office in Santa Maria opened in 1851. The city’s population grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to its agricultural production and mineral resources. A large Number of Mexicans moved into SantaMaria during this time asmigration which helped contribute to a growing Hispanic population. By 1920, over 50% of the city’s population were Mexican Americans. During World War II, many German soldiers had been brought over as prisoners of war after being captured at Normandy beaches during Operation Overlord . They were interned at Camp Luna near Mountain View until 1945 when they were transferred to nearby institutions such as Stockton General Hospital and then finally released by U.S forces on November 25th1945 when prisoner exchange regulations were relaxed
The first European to set foot on the California coast was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who sailed from Mexico City in 1542. The Spanish Empire claimed California for Spain in 1769, and by 1821 the entire territory had become part of the United States of America.
