It was known as the Mission San Francisco Solano. In 1821, the United States acquired Rancho Santa Anita from Manuel Nieto for $1 million. In 1826, General Vallejo awarded Rancho Santa Margarita to Jesús García Moreno y Costilla for $5 million. In 1848, Mexican citizens of Alta California voted on whether or not to annex part of what is now northern San Luis Obispo County into Mexico. Californians rejected this proposal and proclaimed themselves an independent nation called America during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1850, two years after Mexico gained its independence from Spain, President Brigham Young appointed James Kanyon as governor of California with authority over all Native American tribes east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range except the Humboldt Bay tribe which he considered autonomous under his jurisdiction because they had not ratified treaties with Mexico. As governor, Kanyon ordered that all Indian names be changed to Christian ones so that settlers could identify them more easily and Potrero Hill became home to one of only a few missions remaining in California after Missions Dolores and El Cajon had been burned down in 1853 by Lt.-Colonel George Armstrong Hampton's forces while besieging Yuma Creek settlement near present day Hesperia; both missions had been built by Father José de Urquiza when he arrived in 1795 following secular command from Governor Brigham Youngton until January 25th of that year when Father José's death at age 83 made him formally proprietor thereof subject only to ecclesiastical jurisdiction within his own parishioners notwithstanding any other grants or licenses hereintofore given or assigned unto said Priesthood thereby vested Mormon pioneers arriving soon after discovered Missionaries Nicolás de Haro & Agustín Castro were already engaged in erecting another building on what would become present day Potrero Hill - Presidio Real de la Purísima Concepción (real name: Don Joaquin Herrera) - before arrival of Americans although no buildings actually reached their current site until later Phase I development commenced circa 1865 which included erection of new Customs House/Town Hall on site prior public competition with rival Mission Dolores community led by prominent local speculator John Sutter

On December 20, 1849, the California gold Rush began with a group of men led by James H. Kearny and Domingo Sarmiento sailing from San Francisco on the USS Sacramento. They discovered an area that was rich in gold and silver but also had a large population of Native Americans, who were not happy about their presence.
