Santa Maria, California is an incorporated city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 7,883 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of the Redwood National Park. Santa Maria's history goes back to 1821 when it was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who named their community after Saint Mary of Hungary. The town had a post office from 1829 until 1888 and then from 1892 until 1915. Santa Maria, California is a community located in the Inland Empire of Southern California. The population was 23,895 at the 2010 census. Santa Maria is part of the San Diego–Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Santa Maria were Spanish Missionaries who founded a small chapel in 1769 on an abandoned mission site. After several years, they built a larger chapel and named it after Saint Mary of Guadalupe which they also began to preach to local settlers. In 1824, Alvarado and his men discovered goldfields near present-day Escondido while exploring for oil wells. They decided to establish a town here and named it after their discovery nestled among rolling hills and forested valleys surrounded by sand dunes on three sides. The town grew rapidly due to its location, but fever epidemics killed many of the settlers during the 1840s and 1850s because of inadequate water supplies and harsh weather conditions that led to dust storms every winter. By 1860, over 50% of the people in SantaMaria were Mexican American although most residents still spoke Spanish because most services were provided through religious organizations such as Catholic churches or chapels run by Franciscans or Moriscos (Mixed Muslim/Spanish descent). The post office opened in 1872 with ZIP code 92073; at that time only one block off Main Street stood an old adobe building used as both a Chinese laundry and store before being condemned as an eyesores by Supervisor George Sibley in 1875; he then ordered its demolition along with all other buildings on Main Street between 3rd Avenue southward until only two blocks remained standing when new streets were laid out around 1915 The area now occupied by First Avenue, Third Avenue South., Main Street (now called State Route 1), etc., was originally Indian land known as Rancho Los Nietos about 12 miles west of San Diego City limits where adobe dwellings had been erected since 1820 for ranch hands employed by Captain Doniphan under Mexican occupation; these structures served various purposes including doctoring effects from Mission Creek’s “mirror lake” within easy access distance Single family homes continued to be built into late 1920s even though prices for single family homes had increased 10 fold since early 1800’s when much of this land was purchased from Padres Lands Dept.; thru purchases made thru efforts & political clout on behalf of Mayor McAfee
On December 12, 1846, the California gold rush began with a group of miners heading out of San Francisco and finding rich veins of gold in nearby hills. In just a few weeks, they had discovered over 1 million ounces (30 kg) of gold. The men were so busy prospecting that they didn’t have time to build churches or other infrastructure to support themselves and their families. This left them vulnerable to bandits who took advantage of the situation by raiding their camps and robbing them blind. Santa Maria was one such settlement, which was abandoned in 1849 following a raid by the bandit chief Manuel Armijo.
