De la Garza naming his acquisition La Navidad because it would provide shelter from winter during this harsh time period. In 1839 Mexican grants were made to Father Fernando Rivera who established Mission Nuestra Señora de Loreto al norte de Nuestra Senora del Carmen y el Baño (Now part of Los Angeles). Father Fernando had also been granted Rancho Rinconada including present day SantaMaria by Governor Pio Pico as part of his efforts to build settlements along both sides of the Atchafalaya River Valley as part of General Antonio López Molina's effort to pacify this region following the Mexican War for Independence!Father Fernando laid out plazas or streets fronting his new mission complex known today as Plaza Mayor and Callejon Avenida Streets on 466 acres (242 hectares) within what became known as Rancho Rinconada Park! Today many Of these street names still remain such as: Presidente Batista Blvd., Pedro Pablo Dr., Vicente Guerrero Blvd., Esteban Cortés Ave.. etc... Alvarado St., Agustín Chavez Ave.. etc... Upon completion OFFRADEAN moved into their new surroundings adjacent to Fraternal Order Of Police Lodge #2 building on North Main Street between plaza mayor/avenida streets & Fraternal Order Of Police Building lot! Many original buildings are still extant such as: Parish Hall/Church; School Annex; Store Front; Hotel/Motel; Playa Mesa Rd./Puerto Rico Rd.; Herradura Lane; Chapel Road...etc... Today much property has been preserved for research purposes with access only through specific landowners or researcher Groups such as East County Historical Society Museum staff
