The name may be derived from St. Martha, who was venerated hereabouts before being transferred to Monterey. Santa Margarita changed hands several times and eventually became part of Solano County; it was there that Father Crespo first settled in 1854. In 1868, when California became a state, Santa Maria became part of San Bernardino County; it remains within this county to this day. The first post office in Santa Maria was established on December 15, 1860 (the date of its incorporation). The current post office building was built in 1915 and is still used today as a municipal center for the community. The population of SantaMaria declined during the 20th century due to factors such as World War II and the imposition of air-raids during the war years; however, it has since recovered somewhat thanks to various cultural activities and events which have taken place here over the years. One such event occurred on November 6, 1998 when local High School students (along with their teacher) set out on a cross country bus trip named "Championing Social Justice" throughout Northern California in order to promote education reform across all demographics. Some additional notable aspects about this historically significant region are as follows: i) Many families remain connected to their ancestral cultures through participated / organized ceremonies called “Pueblo” dances which take place every few months or so across most rural areas throughout Kern Counties......... ii) Folkloric songs & stories continue to be passed down orally from generation To generation....... iii) Spanish culture continues largely unchanged despite waves of immigrants arriving over ensuing centuries........ iv) Floridablanca wine continues enjoyed widely both domestically & abroad..... v) Anna Frankenthaler once wrote regarding her experiences living (& working HERE): “I am so grateful I could speak English while living among these friendly people – without them I would not have been able to survive…..These natives know how to party……There wasn’t one day I didn’t enjoy myself…………I feel very lucky my family chose this area…..Thank you again….All my friends said goodbye goodnight……When we move away we want you all with us……."
The first Europeans to visit Santa Maria, California were the Franciscan friars who founded Mission San Francisco in 1769. The mission was destroyed by a fire in 1817 and replaced with a secular church, which was dedicated in 1828. In 1846, the name of the church was changed to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church after Mexican independence from Spain. After World War II, thechurch became Spanish-speaking and it was renamed Holy Rosary Parish in 1957. The parish is now part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fresno.
