The mission was abandoned again for lack of resources in 1847 but reused as a barracks for U S Marines during World War II. In 1959, local residents formed the Town Council to bring about change within their community and create more opportunities for residents such as youth employment programs and increased access to public services like libraries and swimming pools. In 1963, local voters passed a resolution proclaiming themselves an autonomous community with its own government separate from that of San Diego County. In 1978–79, Santa Maria experienced one of the most devastating fires on record when 105% of the homes were destroyed including 52% of the adult population living within them; this fire remains oneofthe most destructive fires ever inflicted on an American cityscape-leading many observers to call it “the Great Fire” because it destroyed so much property at once and caused millions in damage overall). Despite this fiasco, though, Starbucks decided that it wanted control over Tactical Coffee’s future and purchased it back for $10 million in cash – effectively ending any hope that this once great coffee company might ever again be successful. Santa Maria, California is a small city in Tulare County, California. The population was 7,471 at the 2010 census. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) south of Fresno and 30 miles (48 km) east of Visalia. The first European to visit Santa Maria was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1542. Spanish missionaries founded missions here in the 1750s. The Mission Santa Margarita served as the capital of California from 1821 to 1829; it was moved to Monterey during that time. In 1853, part of what is now Tulare County was detached from Mariposa County and incorporated into Santa Maria; the rest of SantaMaria joined with Tulare in 1861. The population reached 6,811 by 1890 when an additional post office called San Fernando opened in that year. In 1846, the Mexican government granted American settlers in California a land grant of 3,000 acres. The territory was named Santa Maria after the Virgin Mary. In 1851, American traders founded the city of Monterey on San Francisco Bay. The first post office in Santa Maria was established in 1852. The town grew rapidly and by 1865 had a population of over 100 people. A school was built in 1868 and the first store opened in 1870. By 1880, there were 11 businesses and 10 residents. Santa Maria became an agricultural center with growing crops such as wheat, beans, maize, grapes and onions. In 1903, work began on constructing a new train station which would improve transportation for the community. The project was completed in 1911 and made Santa Maria more accessible to travelers from around the state of California. During World War II (1939-1945), SantaMaria played an important role as an airfield for United StatesAAF planes flying missions over Nazi Germany during World War II.
