Santa Monica was founded on December 1, 1900, by John Pemberton and his wife May Irwin. It became a consolidated city on March 14, 1909. The original name for the town was "South Bay City", but it was changed to "Santa Monica" after property owner Harry Condon donated land for the new city on October 25, 1907. The first mayor of Santa Monica was J.P. Morgan Jr.. In 1970, voter approval gaveMeasure B permission to change its name to "Santa Monica Pier." The first Santa Monica area was part of the Tongva Indian tribe. The area was called "Tongva-senin" or "Mountainous Place". A mission, La Jolla Mission, was founded in 1795 by Father Junípero Serra and Brother José de la Cruz. In 1821, the name Santa Monica was given to this area by Captain John Sutter during his California Gold Rush expedition. In 1887, a group of Russians who had come to California were living in a small shack on Hidden Hills Boulevard near Beverly Drive. They called their place "Duchess." The Russian couple who lived there became known as the "Fathers of Beverly Hills." When they died in 1893, their house and land were sold to J.P. Morgan for $225,000 dollars. It remained in the Morgan family until it went into foreclosure in 1916. In 1916, Hollywood producer Darryl Zanuck bought it from the Morgan family for $1 million dollars and renamed it Hollywood Roosevelt Road after President Franklin D. Roosevelt who had been an admirer of Zanuck's work at 20th Century Fox Film Corporation. Hollywood Roosevelt Road served as an inspiration for much of what is now known as Hollywood Boulevard (though parts of it date back to prior Spanish times). On February 14, 1947 actor Ernest Borgnine played a party at Hollywood Roosevelt Road which included then Senator Joe McCarthy and other stars guest list including Debbie Reynolds and Lana Turner. In 1951 actress Jane Wyman attended a function hosted by then Senator William Fulbright at Hollywood Roosevelt Road On October 25th 1966 James Dean drove his Corvette down Sunset Strip from Mulholland Drive into Echo Park Lake while The Monkees were playing at Live Aid. In 1977 actress Linda Hunt visited with her father Art Hunt at his home on Hollywood Roosevelt Road where she learned about hunt's involvement with organized crime before becoming an FBI agent herself. By 1984 most of the homes on Hollywood Rooseroad have been demolished but some remain such as those remains around Hearst Castle which is currently owned by attorney Arnold Schwarzenegger
