The Santa Monica Coast Guard Station has been providing service to the community of Santa Monica since 1907. The Coast Guard Station currently consists of a Headquarters and five Security Forces Units: the Harbor Patrol Unit, the Life Saving Unit, the Marine unit, and the Helicopter unit. The Headquarters is home to a detachment of United States Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (USNROTC) students from USCIS/VCU who provide training in emergency response and maritime security skills. A gift history that began with salt water lilies was continued by donations of flowers such as petunias, daisies, violets, and roses. In 1950s, an annual flower auction was held at which donors could choose between fresh or dried flowers. From this event donations started coming in for plants such as ferns and palms. In 1976 Coastal Guardsmen organized a golf Tournament benefiting local charities which they hosted annually until 1984 when they stopped holding tournaments due to budgetary shortfalls. In 1995 a new Commanding Officer was appointed to lead the Coast Guard Station after many years of experience with other law enforcement agencies including LAPD and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. This marked the beginning of a new era for the Coast Guard Station where much emphasis now is placed on research and development in areas such as homeland security, fisheries management, maritime safety, public health preparedness and more recently cyber-security threats facing our country today

The Santa Monica Pier was home to the first Coast Guard detachment in California on December 12, 1861. The detachment was organized by Captain John Sutter and consisted of a single gunboat. The first recorded use of the name “Santa Monica’s” comes from Captain Edward Warner who donated land at what is now Waverly Beach for a native American mission in 1868. In 1898, the Santa Monica Pier served as the location for an event related to World War I which attracted over 100,000 people. In 1941, the Coast Guard Station Santa Monica relocated from its original location at Balboa Park to its current site at Fourth Street and Western Avenue. In 1955,Operation Neptune's Spear took place off shore near Point Dume when 4 U.S Navy ships were sunk including HMAS Canberra and USS Pueblo with more than 400 Marines onboard. On July 28th 1957,the Coast Guard Station Santa Monica built its first helicopter hangar adjacent to Third Street Naval Air Station which functioned as their helicopter station until 1981 when it was transferred to Seal Beach Naval Air Station. In 1984-1985,the station constructed a new helipad adjacent to Harbor Freight Center that served as their primary helicopter landing spot during Operation Desert Storm and numerous other missions throughout Southern California. On October 25th 1990, Commodore Rickover presented his Presidential message ""A Century of Service"", highlighting all facets of the USCG's history within California
Santa Monica, California is a city in southern California. It is the county seat of Santa Monica County and was founded on November 3, 1926. The city has a population of 69,993 as of the 2010 census. The city is located on the West Coast of Los Angeles County and straddles the Santa Monica Mountains. The name "Santa Monica" was first given to the area by Spanish missionaries in 1769 AD when they called it Isla de la Tortuga (Island of Turtles). The name may derive from Saint Monica's veneration in Rome due to her help to several saints during their time there. In 1849, three Anglo-Irish settlers named John Doherty, James Doherty and Michael O'Malley established what would become known as Rancho SantaMonica within present day SantaMonica Park. At this time the land around present day downtown was mostly scrub brush and low hillsides. In 1912 movie mogul Pandro Saksa persuaded his friend and investor Jesse Lasky to buy about 350 acres (160 ha) near downtown for $10 per acre ($3 million at current prices). This purchase set off an intense period of development that included new housing developments such as Montecito Village, Beverly Hills Village, Rodeo Drive and Laurel Canyon; a large commercial district along Wilshire Boulevard; major freeways including Hollywood Freeway (which bisects Santa Monica Blvd.), Ventura Boulevard, Olympic Boulevard, Lankershim Boulevard and Broadway Road; a network of public beaches including Pacific Grove Beach State Beach just south of Downtown; numerous golf courses including PGA Tour Championspluggable Arnold Palmer Links at Industry City Golf Course west of Downtown; nightlife venues such as Live Oak Lounge & Grill on Fairfax Avenue north of Downtown; ski resorts in nearby Breckenridge Canyon National Park/Pine Valley Resort/ Aspen Mountain Resort
