The Santa Monica National Guard was formed on July 1, 1944, by the division of the Los Angeles National Guard. The first unit to be activated were the 167th Infantry Regiment. The Santa Monica National Guard grew rapidly and within a year had become an actuated brigade with two regiments and six companies. In 1951, theSanta Monica National Guard became part of the United States ArmyRAMR (Retirement Army Reserve). In 1969, it became part of the U.S. Army Reserve Command and in 1980 it was reassigned to Camp Pendleton Naval Air Station Marine Corps Base as a reserve battalion for air refueling tanker Squadron V-22 Osprey aircraft. On September 2, 1984, it became an actuated regiment again when it was redesignated as Headquarters/5th Brigade Combat Team Santa Monica National Guard (Highlands) HDRG also has a long history of giving back to our community through volunteerism and donations both large and small. For many years we have donated items such as toys for children in need or clothing for military families members; we have even sponsored bake sales at local churches! Our goal is always to give back to our community in some way that will make everyone’s day better!

Santa Monica, California is a city in Southern California on the San Fernando Valley. The population of Santa Monica was 105,291 as of the 2010 census. It has since shrunk to 97,814 but continues to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in Los Angeles County. The area now known as Santa Monica was part of Rancho Cucamonga Mission land grant given to José María Narváez on November 25, 1781. On January 6, 1847, during Mexican–American War (1846-48), American Commodore John D. Stockton and his ad hoc force destroyed an estimated 50 buildings in what is now Downtown Santa Monica after sweeping across southern San Gabriel Valley undiscovered. In 1853 Captain David Waddell founded the first school in what is now Downtown Santa Monica; it would later become UCLA. A year later Waddell named it "Strawberry Fields" because he found wild strawberries near the school site. In 1857 up until then all streets were named for saints or commonplaces such as "Church Hill", "Downtown", and so on - this changed when City Council passed an ordinance establishing street names that ran from North Torrance Boulevard east to Westwood Avenue inclusive Thereafter every street name had at least two initial letters and no common places such as "Downtown". In 1886 Hollywood began growing rapidly due to its new discovery by brothers Cecil Bancroft and Bennett Cerveris who used the underlying gold mines hereabouts for their production of films including The Gilded Age (1904). As early as 1888 a short road called Orange Street led from downtown through tiny Russian Canyon into what are today Highland Park and Beverly Hills neighborhoods north of Sunset Boulevard/Rancho Drive where goods could be bought fresh or processed before shipment direct to markets throughout Southern California

One of the first groups to be called into service was the Militia, which consisted of men and boys between the ages of eighteen and thirty-one who had sworn an oath to support the Constitution. The Militia was eventually renamed the National Guard when it become clear that a permanent national military would not materialize until after America’s centennial celebration in 1876. President George Washington established a National Guard on July 4, 1790 under the command of Major General Nathanael Greene. At its peak, there were over one hundred thousand soldiers in uniform serving in seventeen states across America. In 1814, President James K. Polk authorized a nationwide system of militia organization as part of his War Department Appropriations Bill. The Militia Act (1815) created three new brigades each composed of two battalions (of infantry or cavalry), plus artillery and grenadier companies if needed and assigned them to state militias at their discretion. National guard units were mobilized during both world wars because Congress placed such importance on national security that funds were allocated specifically for this purpose without regard to troop levels or other war efforts. After World War II ended, many troops returned home from overseas deployments but continued their membership in the National Guard; however, since 1997 all active duty members have been required to enlist in the Army or Navy rather than join through appointment only .
