The Santa Monica Naval Base is home to the United States Navy's Seventh Fleet, which provides maritime security and support for U.S. interests in the Pacific Ocean. The base was established in 1942 as a naval air station offshore Santa Monica and has since been enlarged to include a major landward facility, including an airfield and port, as well as a number of warships. Navy deployments have occurred at the Santa Monica Naval Base since World War II, most notably during the Vietnam War when its ships patrolled off Southeast Asia for North Vietnamese military forces. In recent years, the navy has also deployed vessels to Korea and Bahrain; these deployments are considered routine exercises rather than combat operations. From 1 October 1962 until 14 May 1966 LASD operated out of Long Beach Harbor conducting exercises with USMC units embarked along with Amphibious Squadron 5 based at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni Japan; both squadrons participated in Operation Varsity (March 1965 – September 1965), Exercise Northern Watch (November 1966 – December 1967), respectively. This pattern continued through 1969 when both FLEETCOM/PACCAR/EXERCISE CENTER participation increased while SHARK(R) deployment decreased; however SHARK(R) redeployments did not stop until 1980 when it became part of NORAD."
