The first settlers in this area were farmers who took up land around present-day Santa Monica Boulevard and Woodstock Avenue. In 1853, James Purdy founded the First National Bank in Santa Monica. This bank was a forerunner of today's Wells Fargo Bank. By 1875, there were three shooting galleries in Santa Monica – one on Second Street and one on Third Street. These businesses soon changed their names toSanta Monica Shooting Gallery, later shortened to SMG. In 1904, Sheriff John Sibley established an animal pen for criminals at Shoreline Drive and Western Avenue. This facility is now known as County Stadium Park. From 1904-1926, the SMG operated four gun ranges: One on Fifth Street between Vine and Vermont avenues; another on Seventh Street between Vine and Griggs streets; another off Ventura Boulevard at Ninth Street; and finally a third range off Mulholland Drive at Tenth Street (now part of Century City). In 1926, the SMG became a members club of the NRA which allowed member shootings at its ranges outside of town weekends only by invitation only. The date that this membership began is unknown but it likely occurred before 1927 when NRA records show that they had 10 rifles available for shootin'. It wasn't until 1942 that comprehensive regulations were put into place governing all aspects of firearms training including handling firearms by individuals under 21 years old (this law would later be repealed). Between 1944-1945, White Sands Missile Range opened up just south of downtown Santa Monica on what is now Harbor Freeway with over 1 million rounds fired from military guns during World War II (the largest amount ever fired from a single location). One year after hosting over 350 events/shootouts atWhite Sands Missile Range throughout Southern California., SMG reopened its doors as West Coast Gun Club with 12 courses offered including pistol & rifle classes for members 21+. With so much activity happening throughout Los Angeles County however,, many new shooters didn't have access to these opportunities or simply choose not to participate due to busy schedules or other commitments (e.g., service in the military). Unfortunately because most rifle ranges closed down during the late 1940s through 1950s due primarily to lack funding or state regulation changes related to firearms hygiene measures such as magazine capacity limits etc., few if any remnants remain today save for several historical museum exhibitsALLowing visitors an opportunity to see how various types of firearms have been used over time IN additionto conducting some pretty interesting target practice!
