Santa Monica is a city in California, United States. It is the namesake of Santa Monica Bay, which forms its eastern boundary. The city was founded on July 14, 1907 by a group of businessmen and bankers led by banker J.P. Morgan, who named it for his wife's birthplace in Denmark—Anglo-Saxon Saint Monica. From 1910 to 1920, Santa Monica was part of Orange County; from 1926 to 1990 it was part of Los Angeles County. As of 2014, Santa Monica had an estimated population of 92,405 residents and is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after LAX Airport. The first Europeans to see the present-day town were Spanish missionaries working under Governor Diego Rivera in 1821–24 at Mission Dolores de San Gabriel del corredor (Mission Dolores). They called the area Tlapalacán because there was no water available nearby that could be used for baptism or burial services. In 1847 Mexican captain Antonio Lopez reported seeing a large inland bay with "a great number" of islands near what is now Pasadena and wrote about it in his diary as Baja California de la California (“Great Bay of California”). A year later Father Francisco Palou saw land extending into that bay on October 14, 1848 from Point Mugu lighthouse on El Capitan Peninsula eastward to Las Olas Boulevard (Upper Sunset Road) between Vine Street and Second Street. To improve navigation for Padres searching for places to plant missions, Palou named two points off Point Mugu: Isla de los Pinos (Island Of The Pinees) on November 13 and Isla Grande (Island Great) on December 17. In 1851 American Captain James Kapp sailed into Southern California Harbor aboard USS Discovery while exploring San Pedro Bay looking for new lands southward beyond Mexico City where he thought gold might be found but failed to find any deposits worth exploiting; he reported finding many shoals including Santa Monica Bay at point today known as Saunderstown Reef just north Laguna Beach where he landed his ship Cyclone I upon landing three men ashore including George Vancouver before continuing up river towards Monterey Bay where they spent several weeks prospecting before returning home early January 1852 aboard Discovery along withseveral hundred acres(20 hectares)of land that remains within modern day downtownSantaMonica
