Santa Paula is a small town in the Santa Clara Valley of California, located about 9 miles east of San Jose and 6 miles south of San Francisco. As of the 2010 census, the population was 497. The name "Santa Paula" comes from Spanish for "holy place." The first European to visit what is now Santa Paula was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 7, 1542. He named it after Saint Paul's Cathedral in Paris, France. A mission was founded here on December 21, 1821 by Father José de Jesús Urquiza with thirty members of the Franciscan Order and fifteen native Indians led by Chief Manuel Miranda. The mission was abandoned in 1826 because of lack of water and disease. In 1851 Captain James Wickersham built an adobe fort at the site which he called Fort Wright. In 1862 General David C. Ewing established Camp Gilmore here to supply American forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). On February 17, 1863 General John Jumper attacked and captured Fort Wright while its garrison fought off an attack by Confederate troops under General Alexander McClellan west of Yerba Buena Island near Petaluma Bay. On May 3, 1865 Union soldiers burned down Adobe Walls as part of their Campaign against Mexico City; this action became known as The Raid on San José Morelos (also called The Burning Of Rio Grande). After Mexico won their independence from Spain in 1898, many people moved to Santa Paula because conditions there were much better than in neighboring towns such as Palo Alto or Mountain View. Many businesses that have been around since those days include Old Navy (founded 1903), KFC (opened 1923), Starbucks (opened 1987), Applebee's (founded 1938) and Burger King (founded 1954). The first post office opened in 1909; it later became known as Telluride Station before becoming Santa Paula Station (.
