Santa Paula is a small town in California, located on the San Joaquin River. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Ventura County and the largest city in Ventura County by population. Santa Paula is also the location of Kings Canyon National Park. The community was founded in 1853 as a rancho named Forresby after General José Rafael Forrer, who had fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War and then served as governor of California from 1849 to 1850. In 1868, citizens of Santa Paula petitioned for incorporation as a village and it became one of Californias five towns on January 1, 1870. The first postmaster was Fenton Davenport and Wm Hays Post Office opened October 28th, 1870. In 1907, when Hollywood began to grow nearby and new production companies began arriving to develop films near Ventura County's riverside communities such as Santa Paula and Simi Valley, some actors or their families decided to move away from Los Angeles while others purchased land east of Santa Paula just north of Interstate 5 (the old routing of I-5). By 1916 most residents had either left or returned home following World War I; however a few people still lived there until 1923 because it became an attractive site for farming operations around King Creek Dam which created Lake Simi while construction continued on the dam across from town - finally completed in 1928 without causing any significant damage to townspeople living behind its Linesville shields: "But even though no damage came about during those years there were periodic… fires that burned down what little homes were not destroyed." During World War II many local men volunteered for military service but only about 20% actually did serve; most went off into combat with other American forces overseas while almost all women residents took part in munitions production at war plants like Kaiser Permanente Hospital south of town where they produced grenades and bullets under difficult working conditions before returning home soon after V-E Day 1945. Santa Paula, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,622 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of San Joaquin Valley between Fresno and Bakersfield. Santa Paula has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years. The first European to visit the area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 17, 1542. He named it San Pedro because he saw a chapel there called "El Pilar" (the Pillar). A mission founded in 1821 by Father José Menéndez de Avilés is still active today as the Santa Paula Mission National Historical Park. The town began as a cattle ranch run by Manuel Nieto and his son Francisco Nieto. Rancho Santa Paula was first patented to Jose de la Cruz on November 14, 1848. On May 6, 1850 Antonio Canales granted Rancho Santa Paula to Manuel Nieto's brother-in-law José Martínez y Costilla who had married the daughter of Don José Antonio Flores y Gómez from Mission San Fernando Rey del Ríojo near Bakersfield. In 1851 Moreno Júnior acquired Rancho Los Olivos from José Martínez y Costilla but sold it in 1865 to Augustín Vargas for $2,500USD In 1867 Elisha Chapman purchased Rancho Los Olivos from Augustín Vargas for $5,000USD which added an additional 7 miles (11 km) of road to what is now Interstate 5 south of Santa Paula On October 3rd 1870 David Hale bought Rancho La Mesa from Augustín Vargas for $4,500USD which added an additional 2 miles (3 km) of road to what is now Interstate 5 west of Santa Paula In 1902 Wm Hite erected the first post office in what is now Santa Paula with mail service starting on December 1st 1901 . The name change came about due to competition from other towns with similar names such as East Palo Alto and SalinasGateway . In 1907 two brothers named John Saucier built a cabin near where I-580 crosses State Route 51 just north of town center and opened up mail service between their cabin and East Palo Alto via wagons using a ferry across the Stanislaus River
