Santa Paula is a small town in Santa Clara County, California, United States. It lies on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area and is about an hour's drive from San Francisco. The population was 6,883 at the 2010 census. The name "Santa Paula" comes from Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1776 and named it after Saint Paula of Zamora. The first Europeans to visit Santa Paula were José Gomez and Gaspar de Portolà in 1821. They noted that there was a salt works here and built a fort to protect themselves against attack by Native Americans. When Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, they became part of Mexican America and Santa Paula became part of Mexican jurisdiction. In 1847, the United States acquired Rancho Rinconada from Mexico as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1850, John Sutter founded Sutterville on land he had purchased near present-day Santa Paula. He beganrapid construction of his new city on three sites: Rinconada (now known as East Palo Alto), Mount View Heights (now known as Westwood) and what is now southbound State Route 101 between Guerneville Road and US 101E near Redwood Road). By 1851, Sutterville had become an important commercial center with its own post office, school system, jail and market square. On October 15th that year, American forces stormed Sutterville during the Mexican-American War when General Antonio López de Santa Anna attempted to gain control over California for Mexico

When California attained statehood in 1850, Santa Paula became an incorporated town and continued to be part of Alameda County until it was annexed by Contra Costa County in 1914.
