Santa Paula, California is a small town located in the Monterey County region of California. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is included in the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Santa Paula is known for its dairy products, fruits and vegetables, and wine production. The name "Santa Paula" comes from Spanish missionaries who named it after Saint Paul's church in Rome. The first Europeans to visit what is now Santa Paula were Juan Bautista de Anza and his party on October 20, 1769. They traveled down the Coast Ranges from Mount Diablo to Visitacion Valley and then up the Ventura River to where they camped for three nights near present-day Fillmore Road on November 3rd. De Anza named this area "Baja California," but no evidence exists that he ever founded a town there. In 1846 an ad appeared in The Californian newspaper inviting people to come build a post office at Fillmore Creek because "this country has never been explored by man." A group of men under the leadership of John Cranch formed a company called Fillmore Post Office Company and started construction on December 12th of that year on land given them by General Josiah Copley as part of Rancho Rinconada estate sale (now part of Imperial County). On February 9th 1850 they erected their first building which still stands today - a large logs cabin with two rooms - just across from current dayFillmore Street! That same year Captain Wm Henson built another cabin about one mile east along Fillmore Street opposite current day Masonic Temple #2A! In 1851 Captain Wm Henson donated land for school purposes north of Masonic Temple #2A which became State High School later renamed Santa Paula Junior College! On July 10th 1852 voters approved $10,000 towards construction of what would become Pacheco Hall School - now Santa Paula University! This donation allowed students from Monterey County interested in learning agriculture or other classical subjects to attend classes without leaving their homes! Classes began September 1st 1853 under Professor James Sibley!! From this point forward until 1966 allуs KQED public television station aired programming provided by UCLA Extension Department!! The first cultural event held in what is now Santa Paula was an agricultural fair on May 5th 1870 when over 50 farmers brought their products to market near present day Fillmore Road/Masonic Temple #2A On October 6th 1870 Elisha Bartlett organized a picnic at Redwood Creek with fruitcake being served as an appetizer followed by music and games including quoits and corn dogs!!! The next yearon November 3rd1871 Methodist Episcopal Church organized a picnic attended by around 100 individuals adjacent to present day Masonic Temple #2A!!! There are many contributing factors leading up to founding of what is now known as Santa Paula; however many credit Captain Wm Henson with initiating development here !!
