Santa Paula is a census-designated place in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Santa Paula were fishermen from Yerba Buena Cove in 1776. Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and his Meno brothers arrived on the anchored "San José" on Christmas Day of 1542 and named it after Saint Paul's Chapel in Rome. Father Junípero Serra came ashore on October 4, 1769, with his Franciscan missionary group and began construction of Mission San Francisco de Asís (later Mission Dolores). The town received its name from Spanish General Antonio Vallejo during the Mexican–American War when he called it Santiago del Palo because of a hill near where he had fought. In 1851, Sheriff John Copley decided that Santa Paula would be the site for a new county seat since there was no other town within reach with an adequate courthouse or jail. He named it after Representative James K. Polk of Illinois who was then visiting the country as part of his tour across America to promote statehood for all USA territories west of Mexico. It had a population of about 100 people when it joined Butte County. In 1916, after Ventura County took over most municipal functions from butte county, it decided that "Santiago," an indigenous word meaning "saint," should be the county's original name and changed its name to Santa Paula on November 1st., 1916. One important event which took place at this time was the founding of the University of California at Berkeley on October 16th., 1912 by Drs. George Caird and Lawrence Wernher Huxley with strong assistance from Mrs. Alice Paulson Hooker; also instrumental in this effort were various civic leaders including Mayor Alfred Leland Hastings and Supervisor Roy Bean
