The Santa Paula Navy Yard was started in 1917 by the City of Santa Paula to build a new navy yard. The first ship built at theyard was the USS San Pablo, which was launched on December 12th, 1917. The USS San Pablo served in World War II and the Korean War. In 1966, the Naval Research Laboratory moved from Washington D.C. to Santa Paula and used part of the old navy yard for their research operations until they closed in 1992. The last major naval installation at Santa Paula was decommissioned in 1998 and all naval property became private land. Today, there is only a small collection of artifacts from the navy yard remaining including some ships dating back to World War II as well as a few pieces of aircraft equipment. One example of how much has changed since then is that even though there are no active military units stationed in Santa Paula today, there are still several organizations which use or have used the navy yard for their purposes including Teamsters Local 910 who maintain an office inside one of the old barracks adjacent to the navy yards main entrance; and also American Legion Post 242 which operates a cafeteria within one of the former ammunition magazines located next to where light armored vehicles were once stored inside what is now known as Parking Lot 1 (the site currently occupied by Dollar General).

Santa Paula is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 10,658 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first European sighting of Santa Paula was by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on November 1, 1769 in an area now known as Point Pinole. Pedro Menéndez de Avilés also sighted it on October 15, 1770. The site today is known as Rancho Los Nietos and it lies just north of Highway 101 between Antioch and Walnut Creek. The mission from 1834 to 1853 was founded here by Father José Borrego y Valdivia with the help of American Colonel John Cranch and his men who had come overland from Monterey Peninsula after winning a land grant from Mexico City. Father José's successor, Father Francisco Javier Urquiza, built the two-story Mission Santa Paula on December 8th, 1834 adjacent to what is now Old Town (now Downtown). In 1840–41 Spanish Auxiliary Governor Manuel Michelini established San Miguelito Mission near where the current Cathedral stands and granted Rancho Los Nietos to Urquiza for an unspecified period of time that has never been determined definitively; however it likely lasted until February 14th, 1850 when he sold it back to Urquiza along with other rancho properties following Mexicanindependence victory over Spain at the Battle of Alvarado which ended Spanish rule in California.

The first post office was established here onNovember 26th of that year with Wm Haggerty as its first mail carrier. In 1865 the Post Office moved from Dixonville to what is now Santa Paula after Geronimo bought it from Captain John Sutter for $1 million dollars (USD). The first permanent European resident in the area was Juan Bautista de Anza, who arrived on December 17, 1821. The town of Santa Paula was founded by him and his party of Spanish adventurers as a summer rancho (farmstead). He named it after the small village near his home in Burgos, Castilla y Leon, Spain. In 1827, Los Angeles County was created from parts of Sonoma and Santa Clara counties. Santa Paula became part ofLos Angeles County. On October 15, 1906, the city of Los Angeles was incorporated as a result of an act passed by the State Legislature. At that time, Santa Paula had a population of about 100 people. On November 16th 1906 Mayor James J. Phelan announced that incorporation would close all local businesses so that work on building the new City Hall could begin immediately. The final cost for this project was $1 million which made it one of the most expensive municipal projects ever undertaken in California at that time. The City Hall building is currently used as a branch library for the La Cañada Flintridge Unified School District
