The Santa Rosa Army Depot was established in 1917 as the Santa Rosa Arsenal. It became a major armaments depot in 1951 when it was relocated to its present location on Jerome Street. The arsenal is now known as the Santa Rosa Army Terminal and is home to the California National Guard's 9th Infantry Division, which is headquartered at the depot. The armament depot served as a training ground for both U.S. and foreign military personnel during World War II and Korea, and also handled munitions for local law enforcement agencies. The armament depot closed in 1984 but reopened in 1992 as the Santa Rosa Armory Museum. Santa Rosa is a city located in Sonoma County, California. The population was 38,878 at the 2000 census. As of 2010, Santa Rosa had an estimated population of 44,554. Santa Rosa is the county seat of Sonoma County and home to many local businesses and cultural attractions. The city has a rich history dating back to 1848 when it was founded as Yountville on the Rancho San Rafael Mission in what is now San Francisco Bay Area. The name "Santa Rosa" comes from a Spanish word meaning "holy mountain." In 1853, the Mexican government granted Rancho Rinconcito to Alonzo Jay Gould for his part in saving California from being taken by Mexico during the Mexican-American War. He named his new rancho after Saint Rose of Lima--a Catholic missionary who had worked in Central America before coming to Sonoma Valley in 1827. The first store opened in 1865 and by 1870 there were three stores and six churches within the city limits. By 1880, there were over 100 businesses operating in Santa Rosa with a population over 10,000 people. After years of growth spurt throughout the 1960s through 1970s due largely to spawned economic development initiatives spearheaded by Mayor Tom Bates (now member of theSonoma County Board), downtown Santa ROSA began losing its edge beginning around 1980 when suburban development encroached upon its boundaries making shopping malls more common across Northern California while reducing access to downtown business districts including Sidewalk Café and Joe's Pizza which anchored much of First Street's commercial district during that time period . In 1990 City Councilwoman Pat Youngblood successfully lobbied then-Governor George HW Bush for $25 million towards developing a Downtown revitalization program which aimed at creating jobs and bringing retail anchor stores back into town center while also improving public transportation options within walking distance In recent years large redevelopment projects have occurred near Interstate 880 with plans for hotels/motels on both sides of I-880 leading eastward into downtown Santa ROSA while northward onto State Route 912 culminating with an expected mixed use project comprising residences/retail type buildings along I-880 south side extending into Donnybrook Park adjacent Interstate 705
