The Santa Rosa-based Army National guard has been present in California since 1852. The 1st Infantry Battalion was organized at Fort Davies on December 12, 1852. The battalion traces its origins to the First Regiment of Californian Volunteers which was raised on December 5, 1847 from men from Monterey County and Alameda County. In 1865, the 1st Infantry Battalion moved westward and became part of the 8th US Cavalry Regiment. In 1899, the regiment was redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Battalion and again in 1907 as the 2nd Battalion (1st CA). In 1916, both battalions were redesignated as regiments and assigned to Brigade Combat Teams in order to better subdivide their duties. In World War II, the battalion served with distinction in North Africa and Europe where it earned three battle streamers including a Purple Heart for Pvt. Harry Witherspoon who was killed while defending his unit's position in Normandy on July 6, 1944. On September 15, 1945, following Japan's surrender celebrations General MacArthur awarded medals to all units of The United States Armed Forces that participated in World War II including this battalion which received a Presidential Unit Citation for heroism during its campaign against Japan

The city of Santa Rosa, California was founded by brothers Elias and Lorenzo Santa Rosa in 1868. The city experienced rapid growth during the early years of its existence, with a population of over 100 people in 1870. By 1880, however, the population had decreased to just 15 people due to the Panic of 1887. However, the city continued to grow rapidly during the following decades, reaching a peak population of 220 people in 1912. In 1938, however, Santa Rosa ceased to exist as a separate municipality and became part of San Francisco. Despite this loss of autonomy, Santa Rosa has continued to experience significant growth throughout its history- reaching a current population size of over 350 people. Santa Rosa is located on the southern coast of San Francisco Bay on an peninsula that forms part of the City Creek watershed. The city is bordered by Daly City to the north and east; Stockton to the south; Golden Gate Park to the west; and Marin County to the northwest. The downtown area is situated between First Street and Market Street on navigable waters that flow into Berkeley Bay. The climate in Santa Rosa varies greatly depending on location-ranging from temperate coastal Mediterranean climate near Point Reyes Station (nearby) downslope into inland oak woodland near Mill Valley (to the southeast). However, most residences are built within two miles (3 kilometers) or less either side of I-880 which runs through town center perpendicular to First Street/Market Streets artery providing all residents with easy access Interstate access without having any trouble finding parking or getting around town at night when many bars close at 10 p.m.. Downtown business districts are typically much larger spreads with few residential streets parallel downtown arteries making it difficult for large gangs or other criminal elements control shopping areas while criminals can still get away with serious crimes such as murders etc... Inland neighborhoods have more limited exposure both physically and emotionally due largely outflow from I-880 corridor closer proximity ocean tidal flooding potential resulting in high rates for water damage plus oil spills etc...

Santa Rosa is a city in San Benito County, California, United States. The population was 31,521 at the 2010 census. Santa Rosa has been part of the Greater Los Angeles Area since its incorporation as a city in 1959. The name "Santa Rosa" is Spanish for "Holy Rosary." The first European to visit Santa Rosa was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 25, 1542 during his exploration of the Pacific Ocean. He named the spot San Miguel de Santa Rosa (Saint Michael's Mount). A mission founded by Franciscans in 1797 called Mission San Miguel Arcángeles y Buenaventura served the area until 1821 when it became a Rancho Seco Mexican land grant to José Joaquín Herrera and Francisco Montoya. In 1848, Mexican president Manuel García Mármol granted part of Rancho Seco to American Stephen Tompkins as an inducement for him to sell land east of Bakersfield to Americans. On July 8, 1850, under pressure from Ulysses S Grant and other American officials, Mexico signed an agreement giving American citizens full title to all remaining Mexican ranchos in California. This included Santa Rosa which had been claimed by Alameda County but given to Santa Clara County because of its location near Stockton on the Central Valley Railroad network. When Californian settlers arrived in what is now downtown Santa Rosa in 1849 they called it Indian Wells (now Old Town) because there were no water supplies or settlements nearby that could be used for irrigated agriculture like those established later downriver such as Sacramento and Anaheim Hills. They built their first houses around what is now First Street corner Second Avenue using logs from Thomas Edison's laboratory where he was working on electric lights at that time also known as Northern Liberties Laboratory/ELECTRIC STATION located today at Fifth and I streets NW just south of Northgate Mall across from Kaiser Permanente Medical Center
The first organized settlement in Santa Rosa came about in 1846 when 38 men, women, and children from the town of Petaluma petitioned for annexation into Rancho San Pablo. The request was refused on the grounds that the land belonged to a Native American tribe. However, six years later, after gold was discovered nearby, settlers began to arrive in droves. In 1851, the town of Santa Rosa incorporated and began to build its own public buildings. By 1870, Santa Rosa had a population of over 1,000 people. On July 4th of that year, the town celebrates its incorporation with an event known as "Fiesta de la Plata" which included entertainment and food samples from local restaurants. In 1876-77 Santa Rosa experienced a devastating fire that destroyed almost all of its downtown businesses and killed at least 116 people. The fire was quickly extinguished but left behind a lasting legacy: many businesses were rebuilt thanks to donations from locals and investors. The following year saw another major development when Isabella County was createdout of portions of Sonoma County which then became known as Northern California's wine country due to its abundance of vineyards. In 1916Santa Rosa annexed what is now Marin County (then part of Sacramento) bringing new growth and opportunities both for business owners and residents alike. In 1951Santa Rosa again petitioned for annexation into Angeles National Forest but this time received approval; becoming one of the newest communities within Los Angeles County proper!
