In 1916, Santa Rosa became the first city in California to issue its own currency - the "Santa Rosa Coffee Pound." This helped improve local economy as businesses could now purchase goods at lower prices thanks to their more stable value system.
Santa Rosa is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 97,264 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Marin County after San Francisco and the fifth most populous city in California. Santa Rosa is bounded on the west by Sausalito Bay, on the north by Tiburon Strait, on the east by Morrisons Valley and Big Sur, and on the south by Vallejo Bay. The first European to visit what is now Santa Rosa was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. The region that includes modern day Santa Rosa had been explored by both Spanish and Mexican forces since before then. On December 17, 1846, General Antonio López de Pavón named it Presidio of Monterey for Generals José Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla and Manuel Nieto y Salcedo respectively during their commanding officer's campaign against Mexico City; this presidio replaced Penal Zone #8 which had been founded near what is now downtown Santa Rosa in 1835 as part of alcalde mayor José Joaquín Castilla's efforts to extend municipal jurisdiction over rural areas outside of San Francisco proper. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821,[1] Alvarado Heights[2][3] began developing into an agricultural mecca with large acres of land irrigated with water brought downriver from Mount Diablo via Coyote Creek. A school was built there in 1836 to serve students living around Coyote Creek.[4][5] In 1849 gold was found at Fillmore but no rush followed until 1850 when James Waugh discovered gold at Tejon Ranch only a few miles away from where present-day town limits were established that year. In1852–53 prospectors led by Henson Ewing located placer gold near Whatcom River about 8 miles (12 km) northeast of town limits; this discovery led to an initial rush for some 4 square miles (10 km2). Gold fever ran high as people searched for veins scattered throughout several hills including Point Reyes National Seashore; however, much later (1858) these claims were abandoned because they could not be checked out accurately due to disease released by mining operations nearby such as Sutter’s Mill.[6][7][8] A post office called "Fruitdale" opened in 1865 but failed within six months because mail delivery was Impossible through ranch hands delivering goods up Coyote Creek.[9] In 1870 John Clements started delivering newspapers from his house on Admiralty Way SE between Vine & Oak Streets; he continued doing so until 1893 when he moved toSFBay Area [10]. That yearCongress approved $100000 for public roads across state lines [*]11], included a road leading northwest from Recapture Pass along present day US 101 Business Loop towards Petaluma In 1886Cal State Normal professor J M Gasset designed a new type of educational building which became known as "Gasset Hall".[12][13]:394–395 Gasset Hall served as campus buildings for CSN until 1907 when they transferred to UC Berkeley.] In 1923 local attorney Roybal went into business with banker Harry Fenton making founding investments including acquisition of entire fillipa vineyards property southeast of town starting at milepost 33 latitude/longitude -123 degrees 56 minutes N / 122 degrees 45 minutes W ilemonk Vineyards beginning at milepost 34 latitude/longitude -122 degrees 56 minutes N / 122 degrees 45 minutes W (the fillipa vineyards are now part of Napa Valley wine country).[14]:412

The Santa Rosa area was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 19th century. The town of Santa Rosa was founded on November 6, 1859, by Captain John Fortunato and his men from the ship "Fortunato". The town was named for General Antonio Maria Sanchez de la Rúa y Pacheco, who had fought against Spanish rule in California during the Mexican-American War. In 1862, a post office called “Santa Rosa” was established at what is now downtown Santa Rosa. The first store in downtown Santa Rosa opened in 1865. In 1888, a railroad line called the Northern Pacific Railway reached Santa Rosa through the town. This led to an increase in industry and transportation within and outside of Santa Rosa. In 1905, Westinghouse Electric Company built a power plant near downtownSanta Rosa which became one of the largest electric plants in California. DowntownSanta Rosa experienced significant growth following World War II as military spending increased throughout most of North America. The city hosted more than 30 military installations during World War II including Disneyland and Kaiser Field Air Force Base. In 1948, when Interstate 10 was constructed through central California, new subdivisions were developed around I-10 and downtown Santa Rosa began to decline as businesses moved out to newer neighborhoods closer to interstate highways. However, redevelopment has resumed in recent years with several new businesses opening up around I-10 and mainstreet have seen significant revitalization over recent years
