Santa Rosa is a small city in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census, down from 479 at the 2000 census. Santa Rosa is located on the San Francisco Peninsula and is adjacent to Fresno, Bakersfield, and Modesto. Its downtown district has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. The name Santa Rosa originated with Spanish missionaries who named it San Lorenzo de las Flores (St. Lawrence of the Flowers). In 1824, Mexican army captain José Joaquín Castro founded a MissionSanta Rosa del Norte on what are now First Street and Second Avenue in the heart of downtown Santa Rosa. After Mexican independence was granted in 1846, General Antonio López de Mendoza renamed all of California "Nueva Californía" (New California), including Santa ROSA y Nueva Vizcaya (Santa Rosa and new Vizcaya). By 1850, most of what is now central Santa Rosa had been annexed by Yreka; however, some residents continued to call their town "Rosalia". In 1868 when gold was discovered in nearby Eureka County (), many people moved to Oroville for jobs in prospecting for gold-bearing veins near Red Bluff Thousand Springs (). A few years later mining operations were started along US 101 south of present day Sonoma County () but quickly stopped because of low ore grades (). Mining operations recommenced around 1890 around an area that includes present day east side streets between Alma Street and First Street () follwing Donner Pass Road (). In 1906 American tycoon John D. Rockefeller donated land north of town to build his family's Standard Oil refinery (); this site became known as Rockefeller Center after him (). Although no oil production took place at Rockefeller Center until 1973 (), oil exploration continues today on sites near Highway 1 within miles of current-day Rosalia

Santa Rosa is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 10,827 at the 2010 census. Santa Rosa is one of Northern California's most popular tourist destinations and has been called "the wine country of the North Bay". It is also home to many high-tech companies such as Apple Inc., Pixar Animation Studios and Googleplex. The area that now includes Santa Rosa was first settled by Native Americans in the mid-17th century. In 1821, Mission San Francisco de Asís founded a mission here after driving away numerous Coast Miwok Indians who had raided missions inSonoma County. On July 24, 1846, an act of Congress created Rancho Cañon del Norte with land grants to Anglo settlers John Sutter and James Marshall. The name "Santa Rosa" was given to the post office on November 15, 1851 by order of Governor Manuel Nieto because it lay within 1/2 mile of what would become Petaluma (later Ukiah). As early as 1865 there were plans for moving the 120 families living within Mission San Francisco de Asís limits to a new location near Redwood City when its site became available following discovery of oil fields nearby. However those plans never came to fruition; actually only two families moved until 1888 when both Petaluma and Santa Rosa amalgamated into one town - Petaluma being renamed Sebastopol in 1889 due to its proximity to then newly discovered oilfields around Paso Robles. In 1941 local rancher George Westfall applied for US airlift support from Sausalito during World War II so his cattle could be brought down from north central Sonoma Valley but no action was taken because military decisions were made on an individual basis at that time without regard for residential areas or commercial interests located within those areas...On January 14th 1945 local farmers gathered their forces including members of American Legion Post #3 under Captains Tom Killebrew and Lew Wallace set out cross country on horseback over snow covered hills towards Sausalito proper with hopes of finding help from Air transport Command…Upon reachingPETALUMA they found all bridges had been destroyed by Japanese bombers which caused them to turn back about three miles up the road at Rodeo Drive…It has been generally accepted that Captain Killebrew’s group may have reached Sausalito before February 12th 1945 when significant clouds cover forced abortions at several points along their route making radio contact impossible….By this time Japan had lost control over much of Southwestern Asia so any Eastern airlift assistance might have arrived too late…..On February 12th 1945 General MacArthur discovered reports American planes were being bombed everywhere inside Japan including Sausalito giving him orders not to assist anyone else but himself… eventually all aircraft delivered successfully landed outside Tokyo…………..TodaySausalito still retains some vestige of hope as evidenced by recent developments with regards tankers delivering humanitarian aid directly onto shoreline….
Santa Rosa is a city in California, United States. The population was 68,585 at the 2010 census. Santa Rosa was founded on December 24, 1868 by Captain George Hearn and his wife Nellie as a Signal Station on Rancho San Antonio de los Cahuillas. The first post office opened in 1870. On February 14, 1903 the City of Santa Rosa passed an ordinance to annex parcel of land adjacent to East Palo Alto for statistical purposes only. The city was incorporated on April 17, 1905 with a population of 397. In 1910 the town of West Egg merged into Santa Rosa; however, West Egg continued to be an independent community until it disbanded in 1922 when it too amalgamated with Santa Rosa. The merger removed any remaining distinction between the two cities and they became one municipality under the name "Santa Rosa". On January 1st 1915 the city annexed section of unincorporated County Heights east of its current boundaries which had formerly been part of Cupertino On November 5th 1917 during World War I Lt Col John Sangerblood USMC killed 6 Japanese soldiers while serving as commanding officer at Camp Regency near Isleton before being courtmartialed and sentence given death by General MacArthur who commuted it to 10 years imprisonment followed by 7 years hard labor at Fort Loma In 1920 local businesses organized what would become known as "The Rotary Club" In 1933 there were negotiations for annexation by Oakland but no annexation happened because then-mayor Harry Ahern preferred that Santa Rosa remain its own entity
