In 1853, an independent town called Encinitas was founded on the north shore of San Francisco Bay, across from today's Daly City. Encinitas quickly grew to become one of Southern California's largest communities and a major center for dairy farming and trade. In 1859, when Governor Manuel Micheltorena decided to give all Californios within his state the right to vote (a policy known as "manifest destiny"), Mexican American residents in Santa Rosa organized themselves into a local political entity called the Ciudad de Santa Rosa Party Club and voted to incorporation as a city under the name "Santa Rosa". The city charter was adopted on December 12, 1861. The early years of Santa Rosa were difficult; it was constantly embattled between settlers who desired open land and those who wanted access to water supplies necessary for agriculture. However, through hard work and many sacrifices by its citizens, Santa Rosa soon emerged as one of Southern California's most prosperous townsspeople. A number of key events helped make this happen: In 1865, ranchers prospected for gold near present-day Red Bluff; they found no gold but did find silverbearing ore which they sold to mining companies in Los Angeles County. This led to increased settlement along the eastern side of San Francisco Bay where placer mining began operations in 1867 and continued until 1902 when production ceased becauseOf environmental reasons including high acid levels caused by dissolution of argon gas from nearby hillsides). On August 15th 1870 Spanish doctor José Joaquín Murillo y Ramos sent two Jesuit priests named Father Antonio López de Mendoza (1827-1891) and Father Gabriel García Márquez (1828-1911) as missionaries intent on converting Native Americans living around what is now downtown Santa Rosa Creek back into Catholicism after earlier successful missions among these groups at Rinconada Mission (near present day Woodside), Coyote Hills Mission (southwest corner Coyote Hills Boulevard), Sisal Missions (northwest corner Third Street), etc.. During World War II Japanese Americans were forcibly relocated from their various coastal relocation centers throughout Northern California culminating with internment at Angel Island Naval Air Facility starting February 1942 until May 1945 ........... Santa Rosa was first settled in 1846 by the Mission Santa Rosa de la Mancha. The town was named after Santa Rosa, Argentina, the birthplace of Father José de Jesús Montesinos. In 1848, the United States acquired California from Mexico and established the San Francisco Bay Company as an Anglo-American enterprise to build a water route to Asia. The company built Fort Point on Angel Island in what is now Oakland County, Michigan; this fort served as a base for American military activities along the East Coast during the late 19th century. In 1851, developer George Sanchez set out to plat and build a city on a hill overlooking downtown Santa Rosa. He named his new community Paso Robles after his rancho (ranch) near Paso Robles, California. In 1854, when Mexican forces invaded southern California under General Antonio López de Zaldívar, they found and burned Los Angeles – one of early California's largest disasters. A band of marauders called "The Waco Boys" plundered Mexican villages near San Diego until they were killed by US troops in November 1857 at Rancho Penasquitos east of San Diego. With news of Mexican victories spreading throughout North America, American promoters gathered around Santiago Apostolico with plans for an army march through Sonora on its way to retake Arizona Territory from Mexico had little successraising financial support for their venture outside of Southern Californian farming communities such as Bakersfield and Visalia; these towns became known as "the Lost Cities". Paso Robles grew rapidly thanks to its fertile soil and easy access to shipping routes; it reached 100 people by 1860. City officials began planning streetscape improvements that would make Santa Rosa more attractive to residents while also increasing civic amenities including public baths and libraries. A schoolhouse was erected in 1865 on Third Street between Broadway Boulevard and Masonic Avenue; this building housed both primary and secondary school students until 1925 when it became home to the nearby University of Redlands campus before being demolished in 1957 following completion of Redlands' incorporation into currents city limits). A fire destroyed much of downtown Santa ROSa in 1889 but did not cause any damage beyond some historical buildings such as City Hall which survived untouched until 1955 when extensive renovation work started on what is now One Market Plaza mall adjacent thereto causing extensive damage including loss or demolition of most brick elements within walls dating back over 100 years!
