In 1916, San Francisco Mayor George Brown designated portions of what are now downtown Santa Rosa as "open space" for public use including rolling hills now known as Golden Gate Park and State Beach which are still popular for hiking and swimming today. The original name for downtown Santa Rosa were "The Workplaces". This name was changed to "Downtown Santa ROSa" following approval from the City Council in 1933 during Mayor John Wickersham's term as mayor On November 7th 1922 San Francisco Supervisor Quentin Kopp introduced legislation to rename Downtown Santa ROSa (now called Market Street) following completion of World War II veterans parades from Stockton to nearby Daly City which passed through downtownSanta ROSa on their way into those cities

Santa Rosa is a small city located in the Central Valley of California. The area that now makes up Santa Rosa was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1850s. The town was founded on December 25, 1868, and named for General José Joaquín de Arzobispo, who served as governor of California during the Mexican-American War. In 1886, Santa Rosa became an incorporated municipality. In 1916, it joined the United States as a result of the Nationality Act. The population of Santa Rosa peaked at over 100,000 in 1930 but has declined since then. Today, the population of Santa Rosa is only around 10,000 people. Santa Rosa was home to several important figures in its history including Fred Korematsu and Harry Bridges; both were arrested and incarcerated at Singleton Prison near downtown Santa Rosa following their role in a violent protest against Japanese internment during World War II. Following Korematsu's release from prison after more than two years imprisonment, he helped spearhead what is known as "The Day Without America" movement which sought to create awareness about American racism towards certain ethnicities during that time period. In 1932-1933 Gertrude Stein lived and worked for some time in Santa Rosa before moving to Oakwood Drive near Maxfield Avenue to live with her husband John Steinbeck Jr.; thereafter Steinbecks resided permanently in nearby Pasadena until his death there in 1982. Another prominent figure associated with Santa Rosa during this time was Roy Price who served as Mayor from 1951-1959 and later ran for Governor of California twice (1955 and 1959). Price also played an important role within the American Communist Party (AEP) through his work organizing political rallies throughout central California beginning in 1944 when AEP members rallied against United States President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal policies which were seen as counterproductive toward Russian communism at that point; these rallies marked began a trend where communists would hold public events throughout central California opposing various aspects of Ulysses S Grant's administration which had been labeled "liberal." After Independence Day weekend 1990 violence erupted between rival gangs known collectively as "The Hells Angels" locally or simply "The Hardshirts", involving gunfire exchanged between both groups outside local bars/restaurants along First Street just north of downtownSanta ROSA long ago plagued with crime rates 5 times above average
Santa Rosa was founded on Dec. 25, 1846 by Alvarado and Maria Anna Folsom, two Spanish immigrants. The town was named for Santa Rosa de Taos, New Mexico, which the couple had visited while exploring the United States. The first post office in Santa Rosa opened in 1851. In 1870, a sawmill and gristmill were built in the town; the mills were destroyed by fire in 1886. A flour mill was built in 1907 and became operational until it burned down in 1951. The community of Santa Rosa experienced growth during World War II as a result of military construction projects undertaken by California Department of Defense (CAD) members. One such project was the development of Donahue Air Force Base just north of the town that would serve as home to B-29 Superfortress bombers from Mariana Island after it was seized from Japan following their 1945 victory over America.
