Coffee has been a part of Santa Rosa, California's culture for over hundred years. The first coffee house in the city was built in 1851 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, who also founded the Santa Rosa Sentinel. Coffee beans were ground and roasted at his home until 1855. In 1857, two men named Hermann and Michael Dornbush opened the first store in Santa Rosa that sold coffee grounds and beans. This early business model allowed for more variety in flavor and quality of coffee than is possible today. In 1863, John Harvey started brewing coffee for local merchants in what is now downtown Santa Rosa. By 1870, he had become one of the largest brewers in California with a fleet of twenty-five vessels making seventy-four thousand pounds of coffee per year. In 1871, Alfred Hitchcock bought shares in Harvey's company and began importing Turkish Coffee from Constantinople to sell at local stores across California. This helped industry expand rapidly as various new businesses capitalized on the growing demand for quality coffee. The popularity of espresso led to some experimentation with different roasts and methods of grinding beans which became popular among professional baristas over time. Over time, different types of beans have been used - Arabica (domestic), Robusta ( Italian), Toraja Sulawesi Aceh Darussalam ( Indonesian), Sumatra Selatan ( Malaysian ), Java Jawa Tengah ( Indonesian ), etcetera - all while maintaining a high level of purity or "quality." Today there are many small businesses that continue to serve fresh made espresso drinks from start to finish without any extras or additives like creamer or milk powder which can lower the quality or taste profile substantially! The Santa Rosa Coffee Company was founded in 1892. The company became a well-known and respected coffee house, serving customers from Santa Rosa and the surrounding area. In 1951, the company merged with the Pacific Coffee Company to form the Santa Rosa/Pacific Coffee Corporation. The corporation continued to operate as a separate business until it ceased operations in 1984.

The first espresso machine was invented by Angelo Marzocchi in 1795. The modern espresso machine was patented by Giovanni Battista Bormio in 1875. In 1899, Luigi Bezzerini built the first self-contained espresso maker, which he called the Boil and Coffee Maker.

In 1853, the citizens of Santa Rosa petitioned the California State Legislature to establish a town in their community. The state legislature agreed and granted the town its charter on December 5, 1853. Santa Rosa quickly emerged as a prosperous rural community with an active economy based on agriculture and ranching. After years of growth and development, the townsfolk elected their first mayor in 1865. They also formed a school board in 1868 and began to build infrastructure such as a water system, schools, churches, and stores. The townspeople continued to develop their economy until World War II when they turned to manufacturing for support. Santa Rosa experienced rapid growth during the postwar period thanks to immigration from all over Western Europe; however, it eventually declined after that period due to economic factors such as high rates of unemployment and decline in agricultural production. Today, little remains ofSanta Rosa except for some historical markers at various points in its history

The first Europeans to visit Santa Rosa were Portuguese sailors in 1542. The Spanish Empire claimed the area in 1769, and by 1821, it was part of Mexico. In 1846, the U.S. acquired California from Mexico and set up its own government in Sacramento, Caliornia. Santa Rosa became a city on February 14, 1850.
