The Santa Rosa military community has been around since the 1880s when soldiers from Santa Rosa, California, served in Mexican-American War and World War I. American troops stationed in Santa Rosa during the 1930s entertained children at local parks with GI encampments. The original United States Air Force Base was located on the north side of town and operated by Northern Pacific Railway employees as a tourist attraction. In 1945, after World War II ended, many of Santa Rosa's servicemen returned home to their families. As they began their new lives, many of them brought back souvenirs from their service: bikes, shotguns, helmets and more. This collection soon grew into what is now known as the "Santa Rosarians' Museum of Military History." Today there are over 100 items on display including old rifles and pistols; uniforms and equipment from both world wars; medals and citations; vehicles including tanks, trucks and planes; U.S. Marine Corps memorabilia dating back to World War II; Japanese war materiel from 1942-1945; as well as Native American artifacts from the 1820s to present day. The museum is open daily 9am-4pm except for Thanksgiving Day which falls on Friday 8am-1pm. Admission is free for all visitors!

The City of Santa Rosa has been granted city status since 1966 and is one of the most significant cities in Northern California. It lies on both sides of the San Joaquin River and is bordered by Stockton to the east and Modesto to the north. The first European to visit what is now Santa Rosa was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on September 2, 1579, when he anchored off its coast. He named it San Roque because he saw a small chapel there that looked like an image of St. John Baptist (or "Rocco"). A plaque commemorating Cabrillo's visit still stands at its mouth today. In 1824, Spanish missionaries established missions here includingMission San Francisco de Asís (1824-1826), Mission Concepción de Pacheco (1827-1829), Mission Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes y una Doce Mil Vallas (1830-1835) and Mission San José de los Dolores y la Milagrosa Concepción (1836- 1840). In 1851, Gold Rush fever brought over 10,000 prospectors to this area seeking gold discoveries; many built cabins along riverbanks for weeks on end during rush hour just upstream from where later development would take place. In 1865, after passage of the Morrill Act which provided for federal land acquisition in California grants villages comprising 1 square mile with a population above $5 per capita were created as well as Santiago del Oro Village within Santa Rosa Municipal District; these villages became chartered cities under state jurisdiction with their own laws and government structures separate from those of their respective municipalities or districts. By 1870 there were twenty such villages inSonoma County with a population exceeding 500 inhabitants each and all but two had charter amendments establishing special taxing districts or election precincts for specific purposes viz.: fire insurance assessment district #1 forkeeps firefighters employed & classified as public works; Assessment district #2 levied assessments against property values exceeding certain limits
