At that time, the City of Santa Rosa was located within the present-day San Francisco Bay Area and was home to a small military garrison known as Fort Point. The garrison served as a training ground for new National Guardsmen and also acted as an early warning system for the city during times of war. In 1917, the Army moved Fort Point and its personnel eastward to make way for new construction at Camp Goodwin on Cloverdale Road. As part of Army World War II preparations, Camp Goodwin became known as “Fort MacArthur” after General Douglas MacArthur who helped lead Allied troops into Japan during World War II. In 1951, when California became statehood, the National Guard was reorganized under the newly created Department of Defense. At that time, it consisted of 24 battalions divided into 10 regiments. Within two years, however, all but one battalion had been disbanded due to budget cuts and by 1957 there were only 7 active units left in Santa Rosa County. It wasn’t until 1973 that the original 1st Battalion (Lafayette) was reactivated in Santa Rosa County and soon afterwards began hosting annual summer encampments forNational Guard members from all over California. The 1st Battalion continues to host annual summer encampments to this day and is currently responsible for providing support services at several local government facilities located throughout our county including Sheriff’s Department Headquarters in Redwood City and Cal State Fullerton University near campus.

This tradition dates back to at least 1835 when New York's Military Governor George Clinton proclaimed that anyone who volunteered for military service would be required to swear an oath renouncing personal wealth (a practice known as "citizen soldiering"). Additionally, every member is mustered into one regiment or brigade regardless of his/her city or state residency (this requirement was abolished in 1947). Finally, unit meetings are typically held once a month with officers from all divisions meeting together to discuss operations and plan future missions.

After Mexican independence was granted to America on February 14, 1850, Sonoma County was organized from parts of Monterey County including Rancho Cucamonga with its current borders. In 1863 Alejandro Vallejo established himself as a rancher in what is now Santa Rosa with 500 acres (2 km²). In 1865 he married Donna Lucille Means and started ranching there also. In 1868 he donated land to create Yosemite National Park which included present-day Santa Rosa. After World War II most ranching stopped but has resumed in recent decades because of new focus on wine production
Santa Rosa was founded by the Spanish in 1776 as Villa San Pablo. The area now includes Santa Rosa, California and has been part of the United States since 1848. The city's first post office opened in 1851. In 1897, Santa Rosa became a city with its own charter and adopted a new name: City of Santa Rosa.
