The U.S. Navy has a long and rich history in Santa Rosa, CA. The city was once considered the “Gateway to the West” and its location made it an ideal place for naval activity. In 1851, Commodore Matthew Perry sailed through San Francisco Bay on his way to China when he discovered Santa Rosa had been founded as a small fishing village. The navy built their first shipyard here in 1858 and began construction of the USS Enterprise which served in World War II as part of the Pacific Fleet. In 1957, the Naval Station was transferred from Long Beach to Santa Rosa and was renamed Naval Station Ventura County. It remains one of the most important naval installations in Southern California today and is home to both Navy's Helicopter Squadron One (HS-1) and Missile Squadron Two (MS-2). Today, Santa Rosa is also home to two active Marine Corps brigades: 3rd Battalion Marines at Ft. Stuyvesant Park and 4th Battalion Marines at Camp Pendleton – both of which are responsible for coastal defense operations in Southern California. The city also has a strong relationship with Army Reserve units stationed at Camp Pendleton which provide security for local events such as parades or Fourth of July celebrations. In 1853, part of this land became known as Rancho El Desierto de la Claveria. This rancho included portions of what is todaySanta Rosa County and parts of Fresno County today. In 1854, José Altamirano purchased some additional land from Mexican ranchers near what is now downtown Santa Rosa for $5 per acre. This area would later become known as Altamirano Reserve after Jose Altamirano's grandson, Isidro Alvarado Chávez acquired it from him in 1907. During this time period, much exploration took place within present-day Santa Rosa due to its strategic location between two major railway lines: The Central Pacific Railroad (later renamed Southern Pacific Railroad) ran through town and led to new discoveries within what are now Sacramento County and Kern County; while at the same timeStagecoach Road crossed Interstate 5 just outside town limits making it easy for goods to be transported across the state without being lost or damaged during long trips across country or around America! On July 14th 1850 an act were passed which changed the name from San Francisco del Norte Mission District to Californios Nuevo Rey De Los Angeles (New Mexicans Independent Colony). On September 4th 1850 however another act were passed which changed Californios Nuevo Rey De Los Angeles back to Mexican Republic Republic under Governor Edmund Pecos Ibarra with Headquarters at Mexico City until 1862 when it moved again under Gov Manuel Micheltorena into permanent office at Whatcom Creek mission until 1865 when General Antonio López Portillo assumed command following his victory over Don Carlos Antonio Lopez Reyes at Cahuilla Pass on August 20th 1865 resulting in Mexican annexation of all but Northern Sonoma County! The population growth associated with gold mining throughout Northern Sonoma County led to increased demand for housing in Downtown Santa Rosa beginning around 1880s However although there were several buildings built downtown during this time period including First Presbyterian Church (1881), Methodist Episcopal Church (1882), State Capitol Annex Building (1886), Post Office & Custom House(1889), etc., they did not include any schools or other public buildings specifically designed for education purposes until after World War II when a number of neighborhood schools opened their doors within DowntownSanta ROSa! On January 1st 1888 voters pass an ordinance establishing dedicated streetscorneringCanyon Boulevard/Paseo del Rio Negro inside present-day DowntownSanta ROSa effective immediately providing for streetlights along these routes providing illumination necessary for vehicular traffic night & day along with proper signage ensuring safe passage thru these busy corridors allowing pedestrians access regardlessof attire
