The town was named after General José Antonio Monterey y Salinas, who fought in the Mexican-American War and received a Medal of Honor for his actions. In 1907, the University of California at Berkeley appointed Dr. Edward Janssen as its first professor of history and archaeology. Dr. Janssen made Santa Rosa one of his major research sites and excavated at various sites in the city and surrounding area including El Cerrito Cave, Mission San Rafael Arcángel (1853), Alcatraz (1868), Pico House (1902) and Herrera House (1906). In 1916 he began work on developing a theory that human occupancy first started in North America about 12,000 years ago, before reaching Mexico City some 10,000 years ago. After many years' labor, he published his findings entitled "The American Indian Occupation Of Southern California" which helped change our understanding of this important topic within historiography today. In 1940 Santa Rosa became an incorporated city under statehood with its own government; it remains an unincorporated community today."
