Santee, California is located in the Central Valley of California and is bordered by Nevada to the east and south, Kern County to the west, and Mono County to the north. The population was 739 at the 2000 census. The name Santee comes from Spanish meaning "holy place." The town was founded in 1856 by James Irvine as a small trading post on the banks of the San Joaquin River. In 1868, it became a mission station under Mexican rule. After Mexican independence, Santee became part of United States territory until it was ceded back to Mexico in 1902. In 1912, Santee incorporated as a city. The economy has been based mostly on agriculture with some manufacturing and services being mixed in since before World War II when many workers came for government jobs during that time period. The city currently has an unemployment rate of 3%. In recent years there have been several projects initiated within Santee which are helping to change or improve its infrastructure such as new roads and parks which have helped spur economic growth in recent years along with attracting more businesses who support local artisanship and creativity therein.

Santee is a small town in Sacramento County, California, United States. It is located on the 5800 block of Santee Boulevard South, east of Interstate 5 and north of the Central Valley. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Santee were Spanish missionaries in 1769-1770. They named it San Antonio de la Cala (St. Anthony's Settlement). A post office called San Antonio de los Libres did not open until 1851 because there was no specific grant from Mexico for that name. In 1859, George Clements acquired Rancho Las Palmas y Santiago del Valle from José Joaquín Vasconcillo and made it into an 8-square-mile ranch with a mission chapel, cattle corrales, and other outbuildings including a schoolhouse and storehouse which he named La Encarnación (The Incarnation) after Mary Immaculate Conception. In 1864–1865 John Sutter built the Central Pacific Railroad through Santee Canyon between here and his new station at Tracy on the lake shore about 7 miles distant near present day Placerville; this greatly increased Santee's importance as an agricultural center due to transportation improvements brought about by railroads. The town post office opened in 1865 under the name Santa Clara de las Pulgas (Saint Clara of the Spiders). In 1870 Samuel Morse erected a telegraph line from New York City to Sacramento via Santa Clara de las Pulgas along with its own associated substation just south of today's town square; this led to increased communication within and outside of Santee during the late 19th century "Santee has been inhabited by native Americans for over 10,000 years."
